VOLLEYBALL

Lakeside 3, Clark Fork 2

CLARK FORK — With the roar of a homecoming crowd behind them, the Lady Cats exceeded expectations, but fell in five sets to the visiting Lady Knights (25-23, 25-20, 10-25, 23-25, 11-15) in a 2A Scenic Idaho match held at Clark Fork High on Thursday.

Clark Fork High head coach Lyndsie Kiebert-Carey said it was a heartbreaker, especially after losing a close fourth set, a set in which the Lady Cats led 19-14 at one point.

"There were just some rallies we ended up on the wrong side of," coach Kiebert-Carey said. "It's hard when you lose like that, but there's also a lot of positives."

In the team's last meeting Aug. 27, Lakeside won in a sweep. Coach Kiebert-Carey said the team continues to impress her with their desire to get better and play with each other.

One player who looked particularly good on the night was sophomore Nora-Jean Hoy, who tallied a team-high 22 assists in the contest.

"Nora really impressed me tonight with how she took ownership of the offense," coach Kiebert-Carey said. "Only being a sophomore and seeing limited varsity time last year, your nervous as a coach when you put a lot of pressure on a kid in their second year in the program. Nora is tough ... in a word, that girl is tough."

Senior Hannah Thompson, who had 10 digs, and junior Piper Scarlett, who had five aces and five kills, played a big part on the defensive side of things, picking off tons of Lakeside's attacks on the left side.

"Lakeside is notorious for setter dumps; their setter is just a stellar player," coach Kiebert-Carey said. "I told her after the game — 'I need you to graduate.' Our girls looked like they learned their lesson and were playing dialed in defense."

Junior Aurora Lane added 15 assists and five kills, senior Kayla Swales five aces for Clark Fork (2-7) which hosts Timberlake on Tuesday.

Lakeland 3, Sandpoint 0

RATHDRUM — The visiting Lady Bulldogs fell in straight sets to the host Lady Hawks (11-25, 13-25, 22-25) at Lakeland High on Thursday.

Sandpoint High head coach Piper Wahlin said a lot of her players were battling some sickness, so she was proud of them for fighting through the match.

"Our attacking was hot and cold, but our serve receive and defense is steadily improving," coach Wahlin said. "Hazel (Pierce) hit really well across the entire net and stayed aggressive the whole match. Her and Gretta (Beck) provided some much-needed consistency for the team tonight."

Sandpoint (0-8) travels to Lake City on Monday.
