BOYS SOCCER

Sandpoint 4, Coeur d'Alene 1

SANDPOINT — Senior Luke Leavitt scored the first and last goals of the game and dished out two assists and Sandpoint shocked the visiting Vikings with a 4-1 Inland Empire League win Saturday at War Memorial Field.

Leavitt scored on a penalty kick during the seventh minute and assisted a goal by junior Huxley Hall during the 24th to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Senior Kason Pintler connected off a corner kick from fellow senior Keaton Gust to make it a 2-1 game just before the half.

In the second half, junior Jack Treman, off a throw in by sophomore Knox Williams that Leavitt got a foot on, scored after beating his defender to extend the lead to two goals. Leavitt scored again during the 62nd minute, assisted by junior Isaac Schmit, which all but sealed the deal.

"It was a team victory, everyone very much showed up," Sandpoint High head coach Dan Anderson said. "I'm tremendously proud of the effort from the first guy to the last guy — the guy that played 80 minutes to the guy who didn't see the field. The focus, determination, heart, was shown by everyone on the team and was a huge boost for us throughout the game when we needed it."

Anderson said there were up and down moments, despite getting the goals the Bulldogs did, but the support from his bench and communication from his players on the field during the ebbs and flows made the difference.

Another difference maker in the contest was Sandpoint senior goalkeeper Gavan Miles, who had 10 saves.

"Gavan played well throughout the game, but specifically in that last 20 minutes, he made some goal line saves that were incredible," coach Anderson said. "For the other team, it's so demoralizing when your goalie is a brick wall back there like he was tonight."

Sandpoint (5-3-2) travels to Moscow on Friday.
