John Reinhart 'Johnny' Bertus, 77
John Reinhardt "Johnny" Bertus graduated to Heaven on Aug. 22, 2024.
He was born Feb. 20, 1947, in Tacoma, Wash., to Gerhard John Bertus and Helen Joan Funk Bertus, their second son. His birth was a difficult one, and left him with cerebral palsy.
There were those who thought Johnny would never be able to do much with his life, but he proved them all wrong. Thanks to his parents and some compassionate professionals, Johnny finally could walk with the help of braces at age 6. His mom helped him memorize the Cub Scout oath, and many Bible scriptures. He went to school for special needs kids and worked hard to learn to write and read. Later as an adult, he went through training at Magic Valley Rehabilitation Center to work at janitorial services, and served his community of Wendell, Idaho, in that capacity.
Johnny was an honorary member of the Wendell Fire Department, served as president of the local Kiwanis, and was instrumental in raising money for the construction of the local swimming pool and other charitable endeavors. He was an active member of Living Waters Presbyterian Church in Wendell, and an active participant in Walk to Emmaus events.
With a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh, he was endeared by all. But most of all, Johnny depended on his relationship with Jesus. His aim was to have everyone know Him, too.
He is survived by his brother, David (Jenna) Bertus; sisters Christine (Douglas) Schrenk and Ann (Robert) Fraser; nephews Perry (Michele) Bertus and Christopher Bertus; and nieces Megan (Chris) Biggs and Elizabeth (Matthew) Olson; a grandnephew and three grandnieces and numerous cousins.
A celebration of his life will be held Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. at Living Waters Presbyterian Church in Wendell, Idaho.
Family and friends are invited to sign Johnny’s online guest book at coffeltfuneral.com.
Arrangements are under the care of Coffelt Funeral Service.
