Prop 1 vote is a very important one

| September 24, 2024 1:00 AM

It's that time when the voter must decide the truth or face the consequences.

Prop 1 is on the ballot and according to its supporters — there are many — it will save democracy. Forgive me for being blunt, but this effort to undermine the one vote one person tradition of our republic is akin to the proverbial camel trying to get its nose inside the tent of voter independence.

Unfortunately, its proponents conflate two ideas — open primaries and ranked choice voting. I support open primaries, but I will never entertain RCV. According to several Google articles I consulted, RCV theory "began" in the 13th century, and it emerged in the United States in 1948 as part of what was described as welfare economics.

At the present time only two states — Alaska and Maine — have adopted RCV with Alaska trying to undo the damage of its 2022 fiasco. It is interesting to note both of these states are "red" leaning. No "blue" state has ever adopted RCV or even experimented with this mathematical effort to choose a consensus candidate.

We have a very important election this year. I encourage every voter to read the voter guide published by the state and any other source of information regarding RCV. Our democracy is much too important to leave to the artifice of a mathematical formula.
