HB 96 is threat to local control, community values

| April 1, 2025 1:00 AM

The Idaho Legislature is accelerating its alarming trend of consolidating power at the expense of individuals and local communities. If this continues, Idaho may soon resemble the very California many of these lawmakers claim to oppose. This legislative session has been marked by a series of extreme measures aimed at stripping away the rights of local communities to set their own priorities. House Bill 96 is a prime example of this overreach.

Under this proposed law, communities like Bonners Ferry could face legal consequences for simple, meaningful acts of local pride. For instance, if we choose to fly a Canadian flag to honor our neighbors or create a flag celebrating our rich logging and farming heritage, we could be in violation of this new mandate. This is not just unnecessary—it’s an affront to the values of local autonomy and common sense.

Bonners Ferry has always adhered to established protocols for displaying the American flag, and we take immense pride in our patriotism. In fact, I challenge any legislator to find a more patriotic community than ours. Yet, this bill seeks to impose a one-size-fits-all approach that disregards the unique character and traditions of Idaho’s towns and cities.

Thankfully, Senator Jim Woodward, a former nuclear submarine officer and a proud representative of Bonners Ferry, stood against this misguided legislation. His "no" vote reflects the values of our community—values rooted in local control and maximum freedoms.

It’s time to remind the Idaho Legislature that we, the people of Idaho, cherish our independence and reject unnecessary government overreach. Let’s stand together to protect our rights and preserve the spirit of local governance that makes Idaho unique.
