PRIEST RIVER — Junior Logan Troumbley and freshman Layton Goins both had multi-hit efforts as the host Spartans' comeback bid fell just shy in a 3A Central Idaho League game held Thursday at Priest River Junior High.

Sophomore Borden Collins, who struck out 10 batters over 5.2 innings on the mound, started Priest River off with an RBI groundout in the bottom on the second inning that scored Goins. In the sixth, however, the Wildcats put up a 5-spot to take a four-run lead heading into the bottom half of the inning.

The Spartans rallied, with Goins hitting an RBI single to center in the sixth and sophomore Brayden Elder a two-run double to left in the final frame, but Kellogg was able to maintain their 5-4 lead, throwing a couple of strikeouts and tagging out a runner attempting to advance to end the game.

Also contributing for the Spartans on the day were sophomores Colton Kurpienko and Dave Findley, who knocked doubles while Troumbley threw a perfect 1.1 innings in relief, striking out every batter he faced.

Game two of the rescheduled series was suspended due to weather and field conditions.

Priest River (2-4, 2-4) will travel to Riverside on Saturday for their first non-league matchup of the season.
