‘Second Life’ is celebration of upcycled creativity
The Pend Oreille Arts Council is presenting a special exhibition showcasing creativity and the transformation of ordinary objects.
"Second Life: Art from the Unexpected" is an exhibition showcasing the innovative work of artists who transform repurposed, upcycled, and found materials into works of fine art. The show opens Friday, April 4, with a reception from 5-7 p.m. at the POAC Gallery, 313 N Second Ave, Sandpoint. Light refreshments will be served, and the featured artists will be present to discuss their work.
This unique exhibition brings together eight talented artists, Daryl Baird, Judy Baird, Molly Gentry, Alexandra Iosub, Kristina Ludwig, Judy Minter, Holly Pennington, Teresa Rancourt, and Elle Summer, each of whom breathes new life into unexpected materials. The gallery will feature artwork made from cardboard, plaster, paint, plants, found objects, shovels, wooden boxes, and more. Among the standout pieces are Kristina Ludwig’s intricately crafted birchbark dress and Daryl Baird’s repurposed guitar sculpture.
While "Second Life" coincides with Earth Day, its focus is broader, POAC officials said. The exhibit celebrates creativity in a world of consumption and waste.
"This exhibition highlights how beautiful, high-quality art can emerge from the most unconventional materials," POAC arts coordinator Claire Christy said. "It’s a reminder that artistic expression doesn’t have to rely on expensive supplies. Sometimes, the most compelling works come from what we already have."
"Second Life: Art from the Unexpected" is POAC’s first exhibition dedicated exclusively to upcycled and unconventional materials. The show runs April 4-30, offering visitors the opportunity to explore a diverse range of works that challenge traditional ideas of artistic media.
