TENNIS

Sandpoint 11, Post Falls 1

POST FALLS — Senior Jacob Dawson and sophomore Pepper Rickert both posted perfect 6-0, 6-0 scores as the visiting Bulldogs won 10 matches in straight sets to defeat the Trojans on Wednesday.

In girls singles, Bella Bailey was near perfect once again with a dominant win, blanking her opponent in the second set.

"This was Pepper’s most dominant performance of the season; I lost track of how many aces she had," Sandpoint High head coach Kent Anderson said. "So far this season, her opponents have had no answer for her level of play. Similarly, Bella’s serve at No. 2 singles is close to untouchable. She served up 10 aces during her 6-2, 6-0 match."

Nathan Duke, who celebrated a birthday on the day, and Joey Allen were equally as good, leading the Bulldogs to a sweep in boys singles.

"Nathan could never let his guard down, coach Anderson said. "His serve has become a formidable weapon to go along with his solid ground strokes."

In doubles, Sandpoint swept the board as the senior-freshman duo of Aubrey Knowles and Amelia Poulson picked up their fifth straight victory while Lily Evans and Hannah Fisher took care up business in the No. 2 spot. For the boys, Ethan Ballard and Brennan Johnson fended off their opponents with an intense third-set tiebreaker victory while Fisher Dail and Caden Martz won a pair of 6-4 sets to get the job done.

"Our two boys doubles teams avenged losses from last time to sweep Post Falls this time around — it wasn’t easy, though," coach Anderson said. "It took Ethan and Brennan 2 1/2 hours to finally prevail in a third-set tie breaker, 10-8. Their serving in the second set and breaker was steady and solid under big pressure."

In mixed doubles, Avery Thornton and Lane Harris, along with Colby Dyk and Morgan Harris, both posted straight sets wins to fuel Sandpoint to their second team win over Post Falls this season.

Sandpoint (5-0) shows no signs of slowing down and will look to remain undefeated when they travel to Moscow on Tuesday for a 5A Inland Empire League matchup.

Wampus Cats win four matches in Troy

TROY, MONT — The visiting Wampus Cats won four out of their seven matches against the Trojans in their season opener held Tuesday at Troy High.

Charlie Beaman, Priscilla Mayorga and Eli Larson picked up singles wins while Piper Scarlett and Keira Gannon won a doubles match. Two out of the four Wampus Cats' wins came by a third-set tiebreaker.

Clark Fork High head coach Jeff Emmer said it was a great first outing for all of his players, many of whom were playing in their first ever match. Troy, which only has a girls squad, is one of the few smaller tennis teams in the area, so the regular trip to Northwest Montana provides a great way for Emmer and his squad to gain some game experience without a lot of pressure.

Clark Fork will take on Sandpoint's junior varsity today at Travers Park.
