COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Zimmerman riding 6-game hitting streak
Jack Zimmerman, Lassen College Baseball
A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Jack went a combined 5-for-12 with four doubles, four RBI, one walk and a stolen base over the Cougars' four games — two against Butte College (Oroville, Calif.) and two against Yuba College (Marysville, Calif.) — this past week. The lefty, now batting .319 this season to go along with a .452 on-base percentage across 72 at-bats, had a double in every game and went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a single, a double, and two RBI in Lassen's 10-4 weekend-finale win over Yuba this past Sunday, April 13. Jack now has recorded a hit in six straight games for Lassen (23-11-1), which will play a three-game series against Feather River starting Friday, April 18 and ending Saturday, April 19.
Forest Ambridge, Southern Virginia University Lacrosse
A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Forest scored a goal in the Knights' 18-7 road conference win over LaGrange College (LaGrange, Ga.) this past Saturday, April 12. On the season, the midfielder now has registered eight goals, five assists, 21 groundballs, four caused turnovers, and is 24-for-61 (.393) inside the faceoff circle. Southern Virginia (8-7) will host Methodist University for their regular and conference season finale on Saturday, April 19.
Jantzen Lucas, Lewis-Clark State College Baseball
A 2020 graduate of Priest River High, Janzten pitched 4.1 innings, giving up nine hits and one earned run while striking out three batters in a 5-4 home conference win over the College of Idaho this past Saturday, April 12. With the outing, the southpaw lowered his season ERA to 4.10 and has now struck out 33 batters across 41.2 innings this season. The Warriors (28-10), which are on a 9-game winning streak, travel to Bushnell University (Eugene, Ore.) for a four-game conference series starting Friday, April 18 and ending Saturday, April 19.
Luke Butler, Pacific Lutheran University Golf
A 2023 graduate of Priest River High, Luke shot his best tournament of the year, finishing tied for 16th with an 11-over-par across two rounds at the South Puget Sound Community College Invitational held this past Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13 at Tumwater Valley Golf Course. The former three-time state qualifier holed two birdies for a 5-over-par 77 first round and posted a 6-over-par 78 and another birdie in round two. The Lutes will prepare next for the Northwest Conference Championships set to be held Sunday, April 20 and Monday, April 21 at the Michelbrook Country Club in McMinnville, Ore.
Connor Alexander, Lewis-Clark State College Track & Field
A 2022 graduate of Bonners Ferry High, Connor ran a new 5,000-meter personal best time of 15 minutes, 24 seconds (4:57/mi) — 25 seconds faster than his previous best — to finish 10th out of 28 runners at the Jeffrahn Classic hosted by Whitworth University this past Friday, April 11. Lewis-Clark State will compete at the Whitworth Twilight Invitational this Thursday, April 17.
Avery Bayer, Idaho State University Golf
A 2024 graduate of Bonners Ferry High, Avery finished 52nd with a 23-over-par across three rounds at the Bobcat Desert Classic held Monday, April 7 through Wednesday, April 9 at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz. She shot seven pars for a 10-over-par 82 first round, eight pars and two birdies for a 6-over-par 78 second round, and 12 pars for a 7-over-par 79 third round. Idaho State is currently competing at the Big Sky Conference Championships, which started Monday, April 14 and ends Wednesday, April 16 at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield, Ariz.
Austin Dillon, Yakima Valley College Baseball
A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Austin was credited with the win after pitching six innings, giving up seven hits, two walks and two earned runs while striking out eight batters in an 8-2 win over Blue Mountain CC (Pendleton, Ore.) this past Saturday April 12. The hard-throwing righty has now lowered his season ERA to 4.73 and has struck out 45 batters over 44.2 innings — the 45 strikeouts ranks as 12th in the entire NWAC. Yakima Valley (17-15) will travel to Columbia Basin for doubleheader on Wednesday, April 16 and then host Columbia Basin for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 19.
