We are made male, female in God's image
A recent letter (Daily Bee, Jan. 21, 2025) argues that biological sex and gender differ, framing gender purely as a social and psychological construct, even calling it a "spectrum." This confusion contrasts with what medical experts say: Sex and gender are synonymous, whereas questions of identity are psychologically based. There is a reason it’s called "gender dysphoria." In order to establish something is abnormal, you have to have a baseline for what is normal. That would be the gender-sex binary. Both Stedman’s Medical Dictionary and Taber’s Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary define gender based on biological sex.
The real problem is redefining gender and detaching it from biological reality. As such, gender identity is based on subjective feelings. This “spectrum” view of gender is actually quite unscientific and harmful. It stems from radical gender ideology that distorts the link between gender and biological sex, harming countless people — especially children and women. It suggests to people struggling with gender dysphoria something that isn’t true about themselves. The result is not only the social harms the author correctly identifies, but the physical and psychological harm to the individuals suffering from gender dysphoria.
When society turns away from the foundational truth that we are made male and female in God's image, everyone loses. Ignoring these essential aspects of our humanity undermines who we are at our core.
