Goins walks off first game, Spartans sweep Wildcats
Priest River 2, Kellogg 1
Priest River 5, Kellogg 3
PRIEST RIVER — Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh of game one, freshman Layton Goins hit an RBI single to center to score sophomore Colton Kuprienko and the host Spartans walked-off the Wildcats, eventually pulling off the sweep in game two, in a 3A Central Idaho League doubleheader held Monday at Priest River Junior High.
Priest River only had two other hits in the opener, a double by Goins in the first inning and a base knock by junior Logan Troumbley in the seventh that put Kuprienko into scoring position.
On the mound, Troumbley got the nod and gave up just a single walk over two innings before being relieved by freshman Jacob Best. Best, who struck out 13 batters against Newport on Thursday, fanned nine more batters across five innings to grab the win over Kellogg.
In the nightcap, Priest River used a 3-spot in the third frame and a 2-spot in the sixth to gain an edge in the 2-run victory. In the third, Goins hit a sacrifice fly, Best an RBI single, and sophomore Broden Collins an RBI double to center to round out the rally. Kuprienko mashed a two-out RBI single in the sixth and Troumbley knocked home another insurance run on the very next at-bat to put the Spartans ahead 5-2.
Troumbley started game two as well, striking out four batters over three no-hit innings. Collins struck out four batters over two innings in relief as did Best, who clinched the save in what was a spotless final two innings.
Priest River (3-8, 3-4) will host Grangeville on Friday for another CIL matchup.
