Feb. 9, 1975 — HEAD START IN THIRD YEAR

Last spring, due to an inadequate building, the Sandpoint Head Start program was in danger of losing federal funding. The community rallied to find a new building and to donate materials and money. Today, Head Start, introduced locally three years ago, is alive and well in the Odd Fellows hall, 439 Pine [corner Euclid and Pine]. Twenty children are participating, all five- to six-year olds who will enter first grade next year. Five people run the Sandpoint program: Lorene Lee, teacher; Linda Bloom, social services aide; Charlie Brown, teacher aide; Gladys Dempsey, cook; and Dee Garman, bus driver.

ICE SKATING MISHAP

The first night the skating rink at the city beach was in use brought out a number of youngsters for the fun. Gordon Roberts, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Roberts of 911 Poplar, didn’t have quite so much fun as the others, though. In some manner his skates caught in a small hole in the ice and the lad fell, injuring his left ankle. When treated at the clinic it was found that no bones had been broken, but that he had sustained a very severe injury, which will keep him from skating for some time to come.

INTERSECTIONS BECOME BOOBY TRAPS

Fenders continue to rank high on the casualty list among Sandpoint motorists, with high snow banks at all intersections obstructing the view. Police chief McCrum said “Not only do the snowbanks block out the oncoming motorist, the streets are also icy and slippery so it is difficult and sometimes impossible to stop in a hurry. We wish to impress on motorists the continued need of caution at intersections.”
