Nominations sought for 'Women of Wisdom'

| February 19, 2025 1:00 AM

Early settlers set roots near resources and what would become Bonner County was no exception.

However, the true roots are the intangibles: the connections, the warmth, and the welcome from those who settled before you —  the soul of a place. Those characteristics are what turned a cluster of buildings into a community, and much of the founding work was done by the women, Women Honoring Women members said in a Tuesday press release.

"That work continues today in communities across the country, indeed across the world. It’s the day-to-day commitment of its citizens who regularly check in on an elderly neighbor, or volunteer to help fundraise for a school, or see a need and round up like-minded others to help fill it," WHW member Cherie Warber said. "These activities are often done without fanfare or recognition but make no mistake — they are critical to the fabric of any community. They are the foundation of quality of life."

Since 1999, WHW has recognized the community's women who exemplify that, honoring five or six residents each year as a Woman of Wisdom. Throughout their lives, these women have worked to make the community a better place through service, volunteering and leadership. Since its creation by former Sandpoint mayor Marsha Ogilvie 25 years ago, more than 130 women have been recognized as a Woman of Wisdom.

In founding WHW, Ogilvie wanted to identify and honor the community's women who have contributed to the community but also inspire future generations.

Nominations for the 2025 class of Women of Wisdom are being sought. The deadline to submit a letter of recommendation is May 1.

Candidates must be 65 years or older, have a vision and history of achieving goals through collaboration, and exhibit a love of learning. Nominees must also demonstrate a long-term commitment that positively impacts Bonner County, show dedicated leadership, inspire others and face life's challenges with grace and courage, showing dignity, integrity and honor.

Area residents are invited to nominate a candidate by writing a letter of recommendation, describing how the nominee meets all of the seven criteria. Letters of support from others may be included. Posthumous nominees are welcome.

Include the name, phone number, and email of both the nominee and you, the nominating person. You may either email to: womenhonoringwomen@gmail.com or mail to WHW, 419 Upper Humbird Drive, Sandpoint, ID 83864.
