City: Don’t disturb baby moose

| February 25, 2025 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — City officials are encouraging residents to avoid interacting with a moose calf that has been spotted in the area.

In a Feb. 24 press release, Sandpoint said that Sandpoint Police Department and Idaho Fish and Game are aware of the young animal, and that while locals have reported seeing the calf alone, its mother may be foraging elsewhere.

City officials recommended staying a safe distance from the animal. Engaging with a young moose can put the calf at risk and expose residents to potentially dangerous defensive reactions from a parent.

If you believe a calf is truly orphaned or in distress, contact local wildlife authorities for guidance. The Idaho Fish and Game Panhandle Region Office can be reached at 208-769-1414.
