Jan. 9, 1975 – WEEKEND SNOW STORM

Weekend snow flurries dumped up to two feet of snow, causing minor power and telephone outages. The Idaho Highway Department reported several cars in ditches off U.S. 95, south of the long bridge to the county line. Sanding crews worked 16 to 20 hours and sometimes even 24 hours a day to keep highways passable. With Bonner County on the verge of a record snowpack, the weatherman is predicting even more white stuff, with occasional snow squalls thru Saturday, and the possibility of a major storm moving thru on Friday. Highs will be in the low 30s, while lows will dip into the teens.

NO AUTO PARKING ON COUNTY HIGHWAYS

County commissioners remind residents of Bonner county that no cars should be left parked on county roads overnight. The practice is illegal and the parked cars hamper snowplowing. The county is not responsible for damage which may result if a car is struck. By a little work, any resident can shovel out enough to make a place to drive his car in off the highway,” said the commissioners, adding that appropriate action will be taken against violators.

SOCIAL SECURITY UP HALF PER CENT

On Jan. 1, the social security tax on paychecks of about 39,000,000 workers jumped from one per cent to one and one-half per cent. The rise, first in the 13-year history of federal old age and survivor’s insurance, brings a tax of $45 a year on each worker who gets $3,000 or more in annual pay. For the present, old age pensions won’t be any bigger. They start at $10 a month minimum. The maximum now is $45.20. The average is $26.
