New county, courts reporter joins the Daily Bee

Hello! My name is Chloe Cochran, and I am excited to embark on my new journey as the county/courts reporter for the Daily Bee.

I was born and raised in beautiful Washington state, where I spent most of my time playing softball and enjoying the lakes and scenery that surrounded me. It wasn’t until I moved away to college that I grew a passion for journalism. While in attendance at Southern Virginia University, a small school in Virginia, I learned the ins and outs of journalism. I began appreciating the written word, and how its meaning could change depending on who the audience was. It was at Southern Virginia where I learned to be a reporter, a staff editor and eventually an editor-in-chief. I was so fortunate to have a supportive adviser and amazing help from my fellow editors.

When I graduated from Southern Virginia with my bachelor’s degree in English, I quickly packed up my things and moved to Tulsa, Okla., with my significant other and dog. While Oklahoma may get a bad rap for not being as scenic as the Pacific Northwest, I had an amazing time getting to explore and appreciate the things we weren’t used to. Tulsa was also home to my first “big girl” job, where I learned the operational side of journalism; how to code properly, how to communicate across different teams and how to overall be a problem solver.

The decision to move to Sandpoint from Tulsa wasn’t too difficult for us to decide on, it allowed us to be a part of a smaller community! Plus, have you seen the view here?

When I’m not writing for the Daily Bee, you can find me exploring with my partner and dog. I also love to read a good book or cheer on my favorite sports teams!

I’m excited to get back to local journalism, where the people are the news. Where local journalism is the heart of a supportive community. If you see me around town or on a hiking trail, please don’t hesitate to say hello!
