PREP BOYS WRESTLING: Tyler reaches 150th career win, takes home 5A 190-pound gold
Extended Recap from Sunday's paper
POCATELLO — With his 150th career varsity win coming in the semifinals with a 15-7 win by major decision, senior Jorden Tyler only had one more thing to accomplish before ending his career at Sandpoint High — win a state championship.
Well, Tyler did just that, and in doing so, defeated Preston Sonner-Cranney of Minico, who he lost to in last year's 4A (now 5A) 195-pound state title match. Sonner-Cranney is a two-time state champion.
After a 0-0 stalemate to end the first period, Tyler, who finished the season with a 45-4 record, scored 11 of his 15 points with two takedowns and a 4-point nearfall in the second period en route to a 15-5 win by major decision.
"Incredible season... you really couldn't put a stamp on it any better than what Jorden Tyler did today," Sandpoint High head coach Josh Ratigan said. "The way he beat his opponent was dominant. Anything he wanted to do he did and that's a testament to a kid that's as coachable as it gets. Truly one of the hardest workers I've ever had the privilege to coach. He's going to be a hard one to not have again."
Junior Jackson Holman, ranked as the fourth-seed at 215 pounds, clinched the championship match after a 9-2 win by decision in the semifinals. He fell just short of his opponent from Blackfoot, but grabbed a silver medal — his first time medaling at the state championship. He finishes the season with a record of 37-12.
"I may be biased, but I really thought Jackson was the No. 1 in his weight class this year... he dismantled everyone he wrestled today," coach Ratigan said. "Jackson has grown so much it's unbelievable. He's going to be one of those guys that people start ducking. He's so strong, so powerful, so smart... for him to walk through the seeds he went through, including the one-seed who had no takedowns against him, it's pretty crazy. I'm super proud of him and he will be a captain next year. He's a kid that I need to lead this team and is very capable of picking up those reigns and being that person."
Freshman Zak Wood (120) grabbed a bronze medal after picking up a win by a 13-1 major decision in the consolation semifinals and then a win by pin in the third-place match; he finished the season with a record of 31-17.
Junior Charlie Becker (175) finished out the tournament with a 4-2 record, after grappling to a 5-2 sudden victory win in the consolation bracket's third round and then a first-round pin in the consolation semifinals before falling in the third-place match. He posted an overall record of 35-18 this season.
Freshman Ty Wood (98) finished 29-11 on the season and picked up a win by a 5-0 decision in the consolation semifinals on his way to a fourth-place finish.
Junior Jeramiah Palmer (190) and senior Gavin Walters (285) rounded out the Bulldogs' podium finishes, both placing sixth in their respective weight classes.
Sandpoint placed an impressive fifth out of 25 teams with 124.5 points, six spots ahead of last year's tied for 11th finish. At the beginning of the season, Ratigan said he knew his team was top five in the state despite any doubters. As it turns out, he was right.
"We were within four points of Lakeland all day long," coach Ratigan said. "Between the boys and girls, we had 10 placers today, and if I'm correct we haven't had those numbers since the early 2000s. Our kids are really going in the right direction. Both programs, to do what they've done, is a testament to all the great help and great coaches we have. The community is behind us and we're on our way."
