Eva May Whitehead, 93

| March 19, 2025 1:00 AM

July 2, 1931 – March 1, 2025

Eva was born in Cheyenne, Wyo., and came to Idaho with her parents and older sister in 1933. She attended Center Valley and Colburn grade schools and graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1949. She was active in 4-H and attended Club Congress in Chicago during high school.

Professionally, Eva was an educator. After attending North Idaho College of Education, she taught at the Cabinet School — a one-room school — teaching grades 1-8. Next, while teaching elementary and high school in Clark Fork, she simultaneously completed B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Idaho. In the 1960s, she transitioned to Sandpoint High School, where she taught math until her retirement in 1994. She was passionate about her students and her school. She particularly enjoyed volunteering as a scorekeeper at many school sporting events.

During her teaching years and following her retirement, Eva farmed with her parents and cared for them until they passed way in the late 1990s. Throughout her life, Eva contributed to her profession, her community, her parents, her siblings and her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Opal and Boyne Whitehead; her brother, Dolph Whitehead (and his wife, Norma); and her nephew, John Eier.

She is survived by her siblings, Marie Eier of Lewiston, Idaho, Laura Henry of Des Moines, Wash., Richard Whitehead (Diana) of Las Vegas, Nev., and Mary Pettis (Ron) of Missoula, Mont.; and her many nieces and nephews, each of whom spent time with her and her parents on the Whitehead Farm.

It would take volumes to write of the many ways Eva helped as a volunteer in her community and in support of her family. She was ever the dutiful and caring citizen, daughter, sibling and aunt.

Honoring her request, Eva’s ashes will be placed to rest in Pack River Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held for Eva at Pack River Cemetery on July 5, 2025, at 10:30 a.m.
