PREP ROUNDUP: Sandpoint tennis takes down Lake City in season opener
TENNIS
Sandpoint 7, Lake City 5
SANDPOINT — Sophomore Pepper Rickert didn't lose a single game and Sandpoint swept both boys and girls doubles as the host Bulldogs defeated the Timberwolves in their season and home opener on Wednesday in what was the first official high school match to ever be played at the James E. Russell Sports Center.
Aubrey Knowles and Amelia Poulson cruised to their first doubles win together while Lily Evans and Hannah Fisher did much of the same, with both pairs winning in straight sets.
"Pepper played pretty flawless today using consistent, huge serves and massive ground strokes to overwhelm her opponent," Sandpoint High head coach Kent Anderson said. "Aubrey and Amelia teamed up and showed why they present a true threat to make a deep run at state. Amelia controlled the net and Aubrey was a monster at the baseline, and they both served big throughout the match."
Brennan Johnson and Ethan Ballard notched a straight sets doubles win while Caden Martz and Colby Dyk used all the tools in their tool box and battled to a tiebreaker victory, with well-timed serves and quick hands at the net proving to be the difference.
Jacob Dawson and Nathan Duke both picked up singles wins in straight sets to lift Sandpoint to the team win.
"Jacob played at a very high level against his opponent," coach Anderson said. "They both were driving huge ground strokes and strategically placing the ball in the corners in an impressive performance. Nathan was also hitting on all cylinders; his trademark, pinpoint shot selection along with consistent overheads was the difference."
Coach Anderson said the match was an impressive display and a sign of what to expect as the season gets under way.
Sandpoint (1-0) will host Lakeland today for a 5A Inland Empire League matchup.
