PREP ROUNDUP: Schmit, Haesle win in Sandpoint track & field season opener

TRACK & FIELD

MEAD — Junior Isaac Schmit won the 200-meter dash (23.68), senior Torin Haesle won the 400 with a new personal best time (53.50) and the Bulldogs' 4x200 relay (1:33.38) consisting of Schmit, Van Lee, Trey Blumenberg and Kamren Ziarnick took home gold at the Wildcat Invite held Thursday at Mt. Spokane High.

Schmit also tied for second in the 100 (11.55), Lee was second in the pole vault (12 feet 0 inches) with a new personal best mark and sophomore Knox Williams placed second in the 400 (53.93) with a new personal best time.

For the girls, junior Elia Howard placed second in the long jump (14-8), sophomore Vivian Haag third in the triple jump (29 feet 8 inches), and junior Izzy Davidson tied for third in the pole vault (8 feet 6 inches) to round out the Lady Bulldogs' top performers.

The meet featured University, Rogers, North Central, and Mt. Spokane, all of the Greater Spokane area.

Sandpoint competes today at the Bonners Ferry Invite.

BOISE — Five different players had hits, but the Bulldogs came up short of the Broncos on day two of the Buck's Bags Tournament in a game held at Borah High's Wigle Field.

Senior Drew Lehman hit an RBI single to left in the bottom of the third, junior Soren Caprio an RBI single to right in the fourth for the Bulldogs, which were outscored 5-0 over the final two innings.

Sophomore Brennan Shaw got the start on the mound and struck out three batters over 3.1 innings.

Sandpoint (2-3, 1-1) will face Ridgevue today to round out the tournament.

MIDDLETON — Freshman Avery Inge had a hit in both games as the Lady Bulldogs dropped a pair of contests to open up the Win the Pitch Classic on Friday at Middleton High.

Against Caldwell in the nightcap, junior Arah Stevens, sophomore Teagan Newsom and freshman Marlee Stevens, who hit an RBI single in the second and an RBI double in the fifth, all went 2-for-3 at the plate. 

Senior Abi Miller also had a hit against the Cougars for Sandpoint (0-4, 0-2), which will round out the tournament tomorrow with games against Century and Boise.

MULLAN — Clark Fork High senior Hannah Thompson scored a team-high eight points for the East in the annual District 1 All-Star Game held Friday at the Mullan Pavilion. 

Seniors Piper Scarlett and junior German exchange student Kathi Rupp also ended up playing in the contest and scored three and two points, respectively, in what was their final time being coached by Clark Fork High head coach Chris Cavanaugh.

MULLAN — Timberlake High senior Tyler Engelson scored a team-high 24 points, hitting five 3-pointers for the East in a 106-98 overtime win over the West in the annual District 1 All-Star Game at the Mullan Pavilion. 

Priest River's Nate Stifel added nine points, Brock Kreager and Sawyer Staudt three each for the winners.

Trenton McLean, a senior from Post Falls High, added 18 points for the East, which trailed 35-14 after the first quarter, but outscored the West 10-2 in overtime. 

Lakeland's Mason Hensley, who won the slam dunk contest at halftime, scored a game-high 32 points for the West while Sandpoint's Emerik Jones added 12 points, Rece Wolff six, and Wil Leisy three.

Genesis Prep’s Spencer Farrell won the 3-point contest at halftime.
