COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Cox scores first collegiate tennis win
Berkeley Cox, Macalester College Tennis
A 2024 graduate of Sandpoint High, Berkeley and doubles partner Greta Laurel of River Falls, Wis., won by a score of 6-2 over Indiana University Southeast's Sydney Adams and Anellah Trujillo on Monday, March 17, at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center in Hilton Head, S.C. as part of the team's spring break trip. The Scots (3-9), which return to action this Sunday for a conference match at Hamline University (St. Paul, Minn.), won the match 4-3 as a team.
Jack Zimmerman, Lassen College Baseball
A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Jack went a combined 3-for-7 with five runs scored, three doubles, six RBI, three walks and a stolen base over the Cougars' last three contests. During Lassen's series-finale 8-6 win over the College of the Siskiyous (Weed, Calif.) this past Monday, March 24, he was 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. In an 18-8 win over the College of the Redwoods this past Saturday, March 29, he was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. The left-hander is now batting .302 (16-for-53) and holds a .443 on-base percentage to go along with seven doubles, 12 RBI, 11 walks and four stolen bases on the season. Lassen (19-9-1), which has won five straight, will host Shasta College (Redding, Calif.) on Friday, April 4, and then travel to Shasta on Saturday, April 5.
Evan Williams, Tabor College Baseball
A 2021 graduate of Sandpoint High, Evan was electric on the mound this past Saturday, March 29 during a 5-2 conference win over Ottawa University (Ottawa, Kan.), throwing seven innings and giving up just one hit, one earned run and three walks while striking out nine batters in what was a complete game effort. Over 47.2 innings this season, he has now fanned 62 batters, which is more than double the second-highest Tabor pitcher and ranks as 26th in the entire NAIA. The Blue Jays (20-12) travel to the University of St. Mary (Leavenworth, Kan.) today and then to Avila University (Kansas City, Mo.) for a three-game series starting Friday, April 4, and ending Saturday, April 5.
Cody Newhart, Lackawanna College Baseball
A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Cody went 1-for-1 with an RBI double and a run scored in a 21-1 win over Raritan Valley Community College (Branchburg, N.J.) this past Saturday, March 29. The Falcons (16-10) travel to Monroe Community College (Rochester, N.Y.) for a doubleheader today and will host Sussex County Community College (Newton, N.J.) for a three-game series starting Friday, April 4, and ending Saturday, April 5.
Forest Ambridge, Southern Virginia University Lacrosse
A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Forest scored a goal, scooped up a season-high three groundballs and won three faceoffs in a recent 19-5 conference win over Greensboro College (Greensboro, N.C.) this past Wednesday, March 26. The Knights (5-7) will host William Peace University (Raleigh, N.C.) this Saturday, April 5, and travel to Brevard College (Brevard, N.C.) on Monday, April 7.
Alex David, Rocky Mountain College Track & Field
A 2024 graduate of Sandpoint High, Alex posted three new collegiate personal bests at the Al Manuel Invitational hosted by the University of Montana this past Friday, March 28, and Saturday, March 29, at Dornblaser Field. She was 15th in the shotput (31 feet 1.75 inches), 14th in the hammer throw (96 feet 10 inches) and 14th in the javelin (93 feet 1 inch). She also finished ninth in the discus with a throw of 106 feet even, just six inches away from a new personal best mark. The Battlin' Bears will compete next on Thursday, April 10, at an invitational hosted by the University of Providence (Great Falls, Mont.).
Austin Dillon, Yakima Valley College Baseball
A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Austin had another solid outing this past Saturday, March 29, in the opener of a road doubleheader against Walla Walla. In the 10-6 loss to the Warriors, the hard-throwing righty pitched six innings, giving up six hits, four earned runs and a walk while striking out five batters. Yakima Valley (12-12) will host Wenatchee Valley for a doubleheader Wednesday, April 2, and then travel to Wenatchee Valley for a doubleheader Saturday, April 5.
Brandon Casey, University of Montana Football
A 2020 graduate of Sandpoint High, Brandon, a right tackle, was announced as one of eight players to be participating in front of NFL scouts at the Grizzlies' annual Pro Day this upcoming Thursday, April 3, at the Washington-Grizzly Champions Center. The 2025 NFL Draft is scheduled to be held from Thursday, April 24, to Saturday, April 26, at Lambeau Field and its adjacent Titletown District in Green Bay, Wis. — the old stomping grounds of former Sandpoint High star turned Pro Football Hall of Famer ... Jerry Kramer.
