Sandpoint Majors All-Star catcher Cody Newhart, left, celebrates after pitcher Auggie Lehman struck out the final batter in a huge one-run win over Hayden during the recent All-Star tournament. Every team sport has tight relationships between certain positions, but perhaps none more close than the battery of a pitcher and a catcher. How many World Series, perfect games or no-hitters end with the catcher bear-hugging the pitcher? The two positions are often the only players who touch the ball for large stretches in baseball, and the casual fan has no idea how much goes on between a pitcher and catcher, especially at the major league level. At the Little League level it would be easy to argue a strong catcher is the most important position on the field, with a strong pitcher a close second, and judging by the stellar results this year, Sandpoint had both.
