Faithful file into St. Peter's Basilica to pay final respects to Pope Francis
After so many people lined up to see Pope Francis lying in state at St. Peter's Basilica that the Vatican kept the doors open overnight, the lines of mourners waiting to pay their last respects have continued to file past his coffin. The Vatican said more than 90,000 people had paid their respects by Thursday evening. Francis, who died Monday after a stroke, is lying in a simple wooden coffin in front of the main altar, inclined on a slight ramp toward mourners. St Peter's Basilica closed for just a short time Thursday morning after remaining open overnight, and will stay open Thursday night as long as there are mourners, the Vatican said.

Wild places offer all a sense of belonging
Growing up in the Bay Area, nature came with a schedule and a set of keys. For my family, it always took planning, packing, and driving. Nature was weekends and summers, mostly spent at my family’s cabin on Fallen Leaf Lake in the Sierra Nevadas. That cabin, nestled in the pines with water cold enough to steal your breath, is where I first learned to love the quiet, the scent of sun-warmed wood, and the feeling of being tucked into a place that doesn’t ask anything of you but to simply be.

Pope Francis remembered for charming, humble style
Pope Francis has died at age 88. The first Latin American pontiff charmed the world with his humble style and concern for the poor. But he alienated conservatives with critiques of capitalism and climate change. From his election, the Argentine-born Jorge Mario Bergoglio signaled a different papacy, embracing refugees and the downtrodden, especially following the troubled tenure of Pope Benedict XVI. But conservatives grew increasingly upset with Francis' progressive bent, outreach to LGBTQ+ Catholics and crackdown on traditionalists. He badly botched a notorious case of clergy sexual abuse in 2018. Bells tolled in church towers across Rome on Monday, and in the evening, the Vatican began a Rosary prayer in St. Peter's Square in its first public commemoration.

Create pollinator-welcoming landscape for beauty, benefits
When I was a little girl in the 1930s and 1940s, it was the custom to always plant a tree on Arbor Day. Our family always did, and whether a fruit-bearing, ornamental or transplanted evergreen from the nearby woods, it was a festive, meaningful thing for us.
