Ultimately, the House overwhelmingly supported the bill. Backers argued it would give teachers a chance to protect their classrooms in the minutes before police respond to a school shooting.

The North Idaho College Music Department is issuing an open invitation to JazzNIC 2024. The annual event features a series of jazz clinics with area middle school and high school students, who will spend Monday working with experts in the field of music. This year’s event will culminate with a free and open-to-the-public Jazz Ensemble concert with special guest artists and clinicians at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6 at the Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center on NIC’s Coeur d’Alene campus.

Idaho Lottery helps SHS teachers' wishes come true

Sandpoint High School got its wish — actually several wishes — thanks to the Idaho Lottery's Classroom Wishlist program. The lottery made two deliveries at the high school, the first to Allison Sletager, one of the school’s English teachers; and the second to Derek Dickinson for a tech upgrade to the school’s library. The total deliveries to Sandpoint High School were over $3,000.

Bill to arm school teachers on hold, for now

The House has put off a debate on a bill that would give school teachers the right to carry guns on campus. Rep. Ted Hill’s bill was scheduled for a vote Tuesday, but members voted to keep it on the calendar, for now. Hill told Idaho Education News that he’s hoping to bolster support for the bill and address concerns from the Senate, to avoid amendments once it crosses the rotunda.

There were no injuries reported after a Sandpoint house caught fire Monday, said Idaho State Fire Marshal Knute Sandahl. Fire officials said the fire was caused due to improperly disposed rags.
