Vacation rentals play important role in community
Tourists have been coming to Sandpoint for decades. Vacation rentals have always been an allowed, "legal", form of alternative lodging for visitors. These homes have achieved the highest level of standard for exterior and interior cleanliness and upkeep. Though there are only maybe a dozen vacation rental homes in the city limits, they play an important role in alternative lodging for families visiting our area.
Cooperation needed to preserve resources
Twenty years from now, when our children and grandchildren ask us why the remaining scarce resources such as oil, gas and clean water cost so much, how will we answer?
Everyone's contribution will mean happy holidays for all
Every time I go "home" to the Tri-Cities to visit my family, I am reminded of how lucky I am.
Landowners should fence 'game preserve'
Since a group of landowners south of Sandpoint in the Bottle Bay area have designated themselves to be a game preserve, I think they should be responsible for fencing that stretch of highway. A total of 210 people were killed last year in deer strikes and I have seen at least four at that area. When I drove by the other day, there looked to be at least 50 deer in the field next to Highway 95. If you want to protect them, do it responsibly and don't subject me or my friends and family to the danger of hitting them with a car.
Thanksgiving offers chance to honor family
Over the years, from the time of the Pilgrims, Thanksgiving has changed a bit. Still, of course, one of the best holidays in the year, but now we learn more so to a different meaning for thanksgiving.

Why are voters treating liberals with contempt?
During the campaign and in the post election period, I have heard suggestions that the Democratic Party is the party of liberals and the elite. Not being quite sure what that means, I turned to my dictionary.
U.S. increasingly is a nation of the haves, have-nots
We live in an era of ever expanding disparity between the haves and have-nots. Eighty percent of the recent tax breaks went to people who make $200,000-plus a year. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. We find an expanding lower class and a decreasing middle class. America is in dire need of a philosophy offering a better concept affecting the distribution of the wealth of our nation. Few with much and many with little or nothing is unacceptable. We are our brother's keeper.
American flag needs to be defended, not protected
Veterans' Day honors veteran. I was at the high school for the special service. I may not be worthy of the fine efforts but I certain appreciate it.
Thank police for their efforts
At this time of Thanksgiving do we really thank God for the many men and women of law enforcement? They give of themselves so that we can be safe at great sacrifice. How many of us could work the shifts they do, exposing themselves to danger at every turn so that we, the public can live the quality of life we take for granted.

Just don't break the speed limit
As I initially started reading Daniel Mimmack's letter about the Ponderay Police speed traps I thought he was kidding, then I realized he was serious. OK, Daniel, here's the deal, if you exceed the speed limit you are breaking the law. It doesn't matter if the police are parked there or not, you are still breaking the law. Whew, now that we're clear on that, I'd like to address a couple points in Daniel's letter. We've all experienced this, we're driving merrily along and we see the law enforcement vehicle parked "hidden" by the side of the road. There's that instant where we glance at the speedometer, hurriedly look in the rearview mirror, and simultaneously try to remember the speed limit. Then … relief or panic. Sometimes when I see them and I know I'm in the clear, I wave.
Waste may head to Murphy Bay
For most people there are two main things they love about Sandpoint. The mountain and the lake. Our mountain is doing great but our lake is in jeopardy. Southside Sewer District wants to dump processed waste into our beautiful crystal clear lake.
NICAN and front page coverage
I enjoyed the guest opinion in the Nov. 11, 2004, Bee by Leigh Rasor. Her position is the position of the big majority in and around town, but of course on the front page of the same issue was a "news article" about the darlin' of the Bee, NICAN('t).
David Keyes is publisher of the Bee.

Vinegar works wonders when it comes to cleaning
Maybe one of the oldest and most often forgotten cleaners on the market to day is vinegar. As a young lad I can remember my grandmother using vinegar for just about every thing. I often wondered why it way so effective. It wasn't until I went to college that I found out that vinegar was a mild acid and that's why is cleaned so well. Below is a list of a few things that I personally clean with vinegar:

I have tried to understand for years now, why the city fathers and the county commissioners are constantly at odds over issues that affect all citizens of Bonner County and the city of Sandpoint.
Two-party system is alive and well
The Daily Bee is certainly correct that democracy was the big winner in the recent election — with 79 percent of Bonner County registered voters casting ballots. And while Republicans came out on top in our races (narrowly in several) in the most GOP of all states, there is some encouraging news for outnumbered Democrats.

Debates, not football, are more important
I was upset to learn that KSPT determined a football game to be more important than one of the presidential debates. The town hall debate was one of only three presidential debates which were offered to the public, a debate which would have allowed us to hear the candidates face off against one another had we been able to get it.

Signs are unfair to female workers

Sandpoint continues to make national headlines
Notes about Sandpoint and this region continue to pour in. Here are a few recent examples:
'Taps' is haunting tale of war
On Nov. 11 we will celebrate Veterans' Day. For those of us who have served in the military, we have heard the haunting melody of Taps. For me the song gives me a huge lump in my throat and usually causes tears in my eyes. The song itself pulls on our emotional strings and causes us to think about past wars that our fathers, mothers, sons and daughters have served in.

City's actions over center are appalling
After reading the articles about the happenings at the Bonner Business Center (BBC), I am completely appalled that some entity would have the nerve to call itself an "economic development" corporation when it is threatening to put 15 businesses out of business and force up to 40 people into the unemployment line. What is the mission statement of this corporation? "Economic development until we don't feel like it anymore?"
