Get a handle on nasty odors

In today's fast paced society we often look for quick cures to solve problems and odor control is no different. As a young housekeeper, I like others would often grab the can of compressed scent to suppress nasty smells or offensive odors. Over the years I've Icarned the hard way that if there is an offensive odor there are active bacteria off gassing causing that smell.

Savage has needed training, experience

My gosh one of the sheriff's candidates is a woman! Recently, in a downtown shop I overheard a conversation that a woman couldn't be the sheriff. When I asked why I was told their place is in the home raising kids. Let's see woman are good enough for us to marry, raise our kids, provide medical care and teach our children in school. In fact, wasn't it us men who put then to work in factories while we went off to World War II ? Today women stand along side and command troops, ships, fly aircraft and in fact fill slots in every known occupation.

The folks at the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce are still shaking their heads over this one. A person called up recently and asked if a representative sample of our resident moose population would be available for viewing on Wednesday … around 3 p.m. Seems they wanted to drive up here for a moose viewing only if the chamber could guarantee moose. I assume they told the uninformed phoner to va-moose.

Project's excavation proves to be upsetting

In my memories of the past 24 years, some of my favorite recollections are of the visits to Dover Point. Sometimes I'd go for a hike, or to fish or swim and sometimes just to sit and think. Kerry's conduct proves he has what it takes

Can there be any question in the minds of the people now, after watching the debate, on who the best candidate for president is? Kerry conducted himself in a clear, strong and convincing manner, showing a mastery of the issues, and ability to think quickly on his feet. He presented a strong alternative to Bush's reckless policy of war. He was more presidential than the president. He explained clearly how the war in Iraq was an enormous diversion from the hunt for Osama bin Laden, and what a colossal error in judgement was made by this administration. Of course many other important issues were brought up and answered in a clear and concise way, leaving Bush looking angry and shaken. I have no doubt that Kerry can lead this country, and help us to re-establish our credibility in the rest of the world.

More details needed on herbicide's use

After Sunday's article concerning Banner County's plans to deploy Renovate in late September, against the Eurasian milfoil in the Pend Oreille River, I heard friends speak strongly against it on principle: herbicides alone won't give us a long-term solution to the problem. Then, my neighbor, a regular herbicide user and waterfront landowner in the proposed treatment area, was disgusted to hear of the plan, based on the proposed timing. After that, my husband and I decided to do a bit of research.

The general election on Tuesday, Nov. 2, is rapidly approaching. We have three candidates running for the office of sheriff of Bonner County. She has come up through the ranks and was chief of police in Priest River and is currently Bonner County undersheriff. She attended the FBI Command College in 1999.

Panida board, community moving in positive direction

Growing pains are never easy, as we well understand in Sandpoint. They can take place in the most unimaginable places. Obviously, the Panida Theater has been experiencing them lately and it's taken its toll on the old theater, the community, as well as the well-intentioned folks who have chosen to come on board to take care of her for a term or two. We've all been bruised and bashed around some, grappling with the many opposing ideas and disagreements in the name of the theater. Emotional havoc usually comes not from the issues that divide us so much as from the things we say and do because of the issues that divide us.

Well said, Ernie. It's time to give those dear old beautiful historic buildings in the downtown area a rest … between the fumes, rattling windows, congestion let alone the hazards which are waiting in the wings, Sandpoint is long overdue for a bypass. No one disputes the beauty of the area, but it's time to remove the eighteen wheelers from Main Street.

Understanding the Rock Creek Mine

Throughout history, the demand for commodities has been constantly increasing. It is difficult to envision a reversal of this trend. Between China and India alone, roughly two billion people are on the verge of becoming middle-class consumers. Good or bad, this is called progress, and it seems inevitable. No one wants to live in a mud hut if something better is available. Inhabitants of the developing world want to enjoy the same shiny gadgets that we take for granted here in the United States.

Panida shines as community asset

The Panida Theater represents a fantastic, unique and valuable resource, especially in a town the size of Sandpoint. Like other art houses, they are known to bring viewings and voices other than the unquestioning and commercial fare offered by Hollywood. By showing thought-provoking films such as "Fahrenheit 9/11" and "The Corporation," it allows us to consider where we are going as a nation. The two different documentaries above share one thing in common, and that is they question the status quo (and, if you have been paying attention, it seems that some questioning is in order).

Shrimp ruining lake's fisheries

In regards to the public meeting on Sept. 15 by the Idaho Department Fish and Game. The meeting was, for once, conducted very well with the exception of one individual, Mr. Hobart Jinkins, who is the chairman of the citizens advisory committee. I would like to know how long this man has lived here and if he was here fishing this lake before the mica shrimp were put in? He obviously doesn't know anything of the history of this lake or he would have known many years ago how long a kokanee lives. Every lake where shrimp were introduced the kokanee fishing was ruined.
