You folks in the blue states should be very proud of yourselves. For the first time in American history you have elected a Marxist as president.
Column poked fun at reader, not reporter
In defense of Bee publisher David Keyes, may I correct a misunderstanding? Mr. Keyes did praise the sports section of the Daily Bee. He politely pointed out the adequate coverage via television and larger cities. The second misunderstanding concerns the comment that threw the sports editor into a temper tantrum. The comment was not made by a Californian but by a Sandpoint resident. The sports editor is wrong on both counts. If the defenders of the sports editor were to re-read the article, you would realize the humor. Mr. Keyes was actually poking fun at me for my chintzy bid of $7.

Local teen turns gardens into art
SANDPOINT — There is a character in the book “The Secret Garden” who can charm new growth out of even the poorest ground. Leaning on his rake, Ben Weatherstaff preaches about the meaning of life and happiness from a flowerbed pulpit. A local teen named Jay D. Baker seems to understand that message. His idea of a perfect day is spending the daylight hours elbow deep in loamy soil as he turns bare ground into flourishing gardens.
Democrats threw Hillary under the bus
The Democratic Socialists blew their chance to have a woman President in their collectivist male chauvinistic backlash in the last presidential election, throwing Hillary Rodham Clinton under the bus for Barack Hussein Obama, an even more radical Marxist believer. Just when women, for the first time in our nation’s history, looked to a female President to run the country, the “Good Ole’ Boys Club” in the far left wing of the Democratic Party opted for a wholly inexperienced male interloper.
Legislative intent of food bill is clear
The obvious intention of this bill is to force us to buy our food from the large lobbying interests that keep lining congressional members’ pockets and deny the people any liberty in choosing to buy from small, local producers while not providing for any meaningful protection of our food supply. This is a totally unworthy piece of legislation and Congress should be ashamed to have any sponsors of this bill!
Internet keeps former local in touch
This morning, the day before Fathers’ Day, 2009, I enjoyed viewing David Keyes’ column about his humbling experience of being the subject of a “low bidder.” Reading the Daily Bee on the Internet from Portland, Maine, is just like living in the town I left so long ago. There can’t be many people left in the town that can boast about delivering Sandpoint’s first daily paper, the Daily Bulletin, when it was mimeographed in a small bulding on Second Avenue — and being one of the paper boys delivering it. The Bulletin era has become the present Bee, to the delight of many happy readers, local and “away.” The same building was the first meeting place of the new scout troop.

GOP needs to give up failed policies or die
In high school, we supported our team, win or lose. For those who failed to mature, that esprit de corps evolved into “my country, right or wrong”. Our politics have become similar with respect to parties, to the point that party is more important than country. Both sides are responsible, although, to no one’s surprise, I believe the Republicans have taken it to the extreme.

I was surprised and disappointed by David Keyes’ June 17 column which echoed the attacks and ramblings of a recent lunch companion. Area cadet soars during Army Air Corps training
(Just a few days ago, we commemorated the 65th anniversary of D-Day. My mind turned to my Army days and especially the time overseas in the Third Army Division. I thought about writing something about my basic training and time in the service. I did, and the training part went like this: I was issued a piece (rifle), a pack any self-respecting mule would decline to carry, a poncho, a gas mask that just happened to fall overboard on the way to Europe, a shovel I hated during basic training and loved during combat, a first aid kit, and a few other incidental things. I was, and still am at heart, a dogface, and in the infantry we walked, and walked, and walked, ad infinitum. That’s it — that is all I came up with — but I wanted more than a one paragraph article. I then thought of a man that, to me, epitomizes the “Greatest Generation.” His name is Frank Evans and he shared with me his experience in the military. Here, in his own words with some editing due to space limitations, is his story.)

Where did standard bearer of freedom go?
Is there no end to the embarrassment the Obama administration can generate for the American people worldwide? One of the headlines in a recent Bee on the national scene is “U.S. inviting Iranian diplomats to July 4th parties.” That country is racing to complete a nuclear device to wipe our only ally in the Middle East off the face of the planet. They have continually thumbed their nose at Obama and his naïve approach at diplomacy, their stubborn defiance of this administrations well meaning dialog is spreading. North Korea is on the loose, they are testing long range missiles and conducting underground nuclear tests. Maybe some of their diplomats could come to the party too.

Why wait in traffic? Shop in Coeur d'Alene
I have just returned from Sandpoint and it took an hour. It took an hour to get to Sandpoint this morning. Usually my commute is 20 minutes at the most from out here in Sagle. When you realize that the hour is spent totally in your car, not conducting business anywhere, you begin to realize what a complete and total waste of time it is. Somewhere I read that the delays would only last 15 minutes. Yeah, right.

Just say no, no, no on juvenile facility vote
Yep here we go again, now the Bonner County commissioners are trying again, only this time through the voting process. How generous of them to let us have a say on how much they want to tax us. After two successful fear and intimidation campaigns by the NEA (teachers union) amounting to nearly $40 and with the city demanding another $20.5 million for water treatment expansion this year, the county commissioners want $5 million (to start with) for a new juvenile facility that they tried to sneak through without a vote earlier. Ya know, pretty soon this will add up to some serious money.

Time has come to end antiquated voting system
Attention Republicans and Democrats, has the time finally come to end this antiquated two-party system? Let the person who receives the most votes be declared the winner. After all we live in the computer age and votes can be tabulated quickly without any problems unless, of course, you vote in Florida. As far as that ridiculous Electoral College, didn’t that go out with whale oil lamps, outdoor plumbing, high button shoes, and horse and buggies?
Work on bypass should be done during the night
Having just cooled my heels for a blood pressure pounding hour and fifteen minutes flat on the Long Bridge in an ill-conceived desire to go to Sandpoint, I have concluded we are managed by idiots. Less anyone failed to notice, I will point out there is only one highway into Sandpoint from the south and blocking it during peak traffic in the first booming days of the summer season is insanity.

Farragut range is huge recreational asset
My son and I enjoy shooting as a sport. Our range in Sandpoint doesn’t give us an opportunity to shoot for distance. Several years ago we went to an event you put on for families at the firing range in Farragut State Park that taught kids (and adults), about shooting safety, tracking, and gave kids a chance to shoot small bore rifles, shotguns, bows and arrows. It was quite an experience. I remember there were hot dogs and hamburgers involved also. We were very impressed with the shooting range. Since that time we’ve acquired several rifles and a shotgun. Unfortunately there are few places where we can shoot safely.
