Good uses of government include funding basic research, laying out infrastructure and communication networks, and helping coordinate the provision of utilities and basic minimums of good citizenship. These efforts promote the general welfare and facilitate smooth functioning of the economy. Poor uses of government include picking winners and losers or allowing government to be usurped by special interests, corporate money or nepotism. Those approaches have ways of separating taxes from individuals and reallocating them to uses that lack voter consent, implicit or otherwise. Giving government such a role is very dangerous for small communities with thin tax bases.
Political candidates should promise to freeze salaries
With election time near, I would offer a little mentioned problem. It is not high taxes we are subjected to but the excessively high cost of government that upsets me.

The city market in the square is one of the things that we find most fun during the summer here in Sandpoint. The variety or wares and colorful vendors give it a true small town feel and draws us in to shop almost every day it is open. Besides the market vendors, we invariably will also do business with the permanent shops and restaurants as part of our routine.

These ophthalmologists have both the extensive experience and love of small-town living that make healthcare in Sandpoint great.

SANDPOINT — No matter the area of life, it’s always better to avoid problems than to fix them.
Young hasn't earned a return trip to office
As Joe Young goes around crowing about how he “solved” the Green Owl problem, I can only say, “excuse me?” By secretly purchasing an unsuitable parcel in the first place, Joe is the one who created the problem — it was only the hard work and dedication of the Green Owl Citizens Advisory Committee that brought a resolution. Joe attended only one meeting, and his input was minimal — as a member of the committee I know this first-hand.

SANDPOINT — Ongoing education is an important component of wildfire management for firefighters, land management agencies and property owners alike. Environmental issues are about security
Though most people are aware of the drastic effects climate change poses to our planet, very little view this in terms of national security. However, the threats of climate change are influential to the point where the environment should now be included in our national security policy. Why?

Month calls attention to breast cancer
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a month dedicated to educating women about the importance of early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Since this awareness program began in 1985, more and more women are getting mammograms on a regular basis, and the number of breast cancer deaths is on the decline. Here are a few statistics about breast cancer that highlight why it’s so important to have routine annual screening mammograms to ensure early detection of this disease:

Classes on tap for large-, small-scale gardeners
Probably the best thing I’ve ever done for myself (and my readers) was take the Master Gardeners course in 1995. I was already writing gardening columns and did have a share of experience to pass on in them, but I knew I was really short in a lot of areas — soils, for instance — and signed up for the two-plus-month series.
