Tribal members to begin journey at City Beach
SANDPOINT — Last summer, at Summer Solstice, members of The Upper Columbia Plateau Tribes, which includes the Kalispel Tribe of Indians, joined by their Canadian relations, paddled newly constructed dugout canoes — fashioned from ancient cedar trees donated by one of the tribes on the Northwest Coast — from their respective reservations to a traditional tribal landing and gathering site along the Columbia River at Kettle Falls, Wash.

Seeing with the eyes of your heart
First Presbyterian Church worships at City Beach at least once per summer. However, this year’s event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the desire to keep people safe. It felt strange to not gather by the shore of one of the most beautiful outdoor sanctuaries in the world, to not have a church potluck in the park, and to miss the natural beauty, sounds, and community of City Beach on a beautiful Sunday morning.

Ireland celebrates 'matron saint' with prayers, new holiday
Devotees in Ireland are marking the feast day of St. Brigid of Kildare. She's a medieval saint who is making a 21st-century comeback. Brigid shares a name and many attributes with an ancient Irish goddess. She is seen as embodying women's empowerment, environmental care and peacemaking in an Ireland that is increasingly casting off traditional forms of Catholicism. Some call her Ireland's "matron saint." St. Brigid is being honored for the first time with an official holiday. That puts her in the company of St. Patrick. Keepers of her legacy are preparing to mark the 1,500th anniversary of her death in 2024.

Evening of ‘Spiritual Journeys’ set
On Thursday, Sept. 29, the Gardenia Center will host a free panel based upon the backgrounds of three local people who have had experiences which some would call "beyond belief." As these adventures are being lived in ever greater numbers of people of all faiths around the world, all religious thought and dogma are involved. The very fact of these continued developments tends to indicate a commonality within all humanity, organizers said.

Orthodox Easter mixes spiritual and pagan in equal measure
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Millions of Orthodox Christians across eastern and southern Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere in the world have celebrated Easter. The most important holiday on the Orthodox religious calendar is essentially an outdoor celebration, with equally intense spiritual and pagan parts and religious services followed by feasts, familial and communal. Some customs may predate Christianity, but new ones, or variations of the old, constantly evolve. In an Athens neighborhood, younger parishioners have added petrol bombs to the customary launching of flares as soon as the priest intones "Christ has risen" at midnight on Saturday. Easter is also the occasion of a mass exodus from big cities to the countryside.
