Bulldogs are true champions
It was quite an interesting weekend as I shared the plight of many Bulldog wrestling family members and drove to Pocatello to cover the state wrestling tournament. I managed to watch five times as much wrestling in one weekend than I had in my entire life to that point. Here's a smattering of news, notes and observations from a weekend of wrestling.
Levy offers chance for good schools for affordable price
A letter writer (Feb. 25, Daily Bee) suggested that Lake Pend Oreille School District should go to a four-day week instead of asking voters to renew the operations and maintenance levy.
Drivers need to pay attention while driving
On Feb. 12, the Bee featured yet another article concerning pedestrian safety in Sandpoint's downtown. My suggestion: Take down the bright blue signs that declare Sandpoint as a "walking community" because it is an incorrect statement of what Sandpoint really is.
Stop personalized agendas of special interest groups
In his letter (Feb. 20, Daily Bee), Lawrence Fury has given us a glimpse into the future. In the spirit of things, I have a few of my own headlines to add.

District must operate effectively without levy
That "black hole" of property tax extraction is back with propaganda is full swing for a March supplemental property tax levy. A Lake Pend Oreille School District board member has stated that a "four-day week is not an option." Apparently the attitude is let's not do what is necessary to operate as economically as possible but just go to our "money tree," Bonner County property owners, and extract some more taxes.
Community will benefit from better schools
I am responding to the letter (Feb. 15, Daily Bee) from the gentleman who objects to the school levy. Mr. DeHaan obviously has never been a teacher. I also seriously doubt that he has ever spent time in a classroom. I would guess that his only classroom experience was that spent as a student many years ago. I have spent more than 12 years volunteering in elementary school classrooms and substitute teaching. Mr. DeHaan's perspective comes from deep ignorance about modern classrooms.

Oh, the folly of all the road problems
Regarding Lawrence Fury's "Eastpoint" letter (Feb. 20, Daily Bee):
Let's just get going on current byway proposal
Even in our democracy when the majority vote ought to prevail, groups have chosen to subvert the byway project. The ITD has done many (too many?) surveys and given many options of routes and modes to have traffic bypass downtown Sandpoint. The majority of the public fully felt the current proposed route is the place to build. I have yet to meet anyone on the street who opposes the byway.

Country's founders were men of faith
Although I agree in principal with what Bob Wynhausen wrote in his guest opinion (Feb. 4, Daily Bee), he steps into it once again by stating that many "fundamentalist" Christians take biblical quotes out of context to support a weak argument. For his information many liberals, moderates and even atheists do the same thing.

LPOSD is fiscally responsible, dedicated to students
Recently the Bee published a letter to the editor that identified instances where the school district was wasteful of taxpayer dollars. Many of these charges concerned issues from the past. Since I am new in my role, I investigated these issues. I gathered my facts from Gail Curless, director of transportation, Cheryl Klein, athletic director at Sandpoint High School, and Terri Hanenburg, information technology. I learned a great deal and telephoned the author of the letter to share what I learned to be the facts. I also asked the author to telephone me at any time should he have questions or concerns before making charges in the local newspaper. I certainly respect his constitutional right to air his views and opinions, but I am also hopeful that he will ask his questions of me first before sharing the information as facts. Below is a response to the concerns he has raised.

Is global warming an inconvenient untruth?
One hundred thousand years is a very short time, geologically speaking. Yet, we are told by geologists that 100,000 years ago the land my house sits on was covered by a glacier more than 10,000 feet thick (two miles in depth). Indeed, all of northern Idaho, half of Montana and part of Washington were covered by the same glacier.
