Summer events helping local people with cancer

Almost all of us know someone whose life has been touched by cancer. There are several people in my family and immediate circle of friends who have fought this disease. Many have won; a few have lost. This summer, Sandpoint has again outdone itself with events helping local people with cancer. In June, Relay for Life raised a record amount of money for American Cancer Society. Then, on July 15, Sandpoint's first annual Jacey's Race 5K raised funds and much-needed support for local children with cancer or other life-threatening disease. Now August heats up with two more events geared toward helping local cancer patients. They are Dover Bay Weekend Sports Festival on Aug. 4-5 and Celebrate Life on Aug. 11. Both are uniquely Sandpoint, organized and made into reality through the passion and volunteer spirit of the people who live here. Dover Bay Weekend Sports Festival is a new event, which incorporates the popular Long Bridge Swim with triathalon events and a 5K/10K run/walk. Funds raised directly benefit patients through Community Cancer Services, the organization started by Heather Gibson, a dedicated local resident and patient advocate who passed last August from cancer. Community Cancer Services is a non-profit based in Sandpoint that provides programs to help with food and gas vouchers during treatment, and information and resources to cancer patients and families. The festival at the new Dover Bay development north of Sandpoint includes events for kids, hard-core athletes and everyone in between. People can get involved as an athlete, volunteer, or spectator. For more information, log onto www.racecenter.com/doverbay. If interested in learning more about Community Cancer Services, call 255-2301. The Celebrate Life Fun Run/Walk honors those who have battled cancer and their friends and family.Last year's walk was an inspiration, proving the event worthy of its name. Hundreds from our community gathered to walk the Long Bridge for a common cause. The funds raised are distributed by nurses at Bonner General Hospital and Bonner Community Hospice who work with local cancer patients. They might use the money to help someone who needs fuel to get to and from treatments or purchase an uplifting bouquet of flowers for a patient. The nurses at BGH and Hospice appreciate the ability to help patients. Shelly Penland, a registered nurse from Hospice, looks forward to helping patients in a personal, caring way by noticing when a little gesture might go a long way and using the funds to make it happen. January DuMars, a nurse from BGH's same-day surgery clinic and one of Celebrate Life's founders, also has distributed some of the funds."It means a lot to be able to help our patients in a more personal way — both for them and for us," said DuMars. Walking in this low-key, non-competitive event captures the Sandpoint community. It truly does encourage participants to get out there and Celebrate Life by helping each other and making each day count.Thank you to the Celebrate Life Committee and volunteers, and nurses of BGH and Hospice for making this event successful each year.To participate in Celebrate Life Fun Run/Walk, come to Dog Beach at the north end of Sandpoint's Long Bridge at 8 a.m. Aug. 11 for registration. The walk starts at 9 and costs $25 for adults and $15 for youngsters between 6 and 16.

Sports

The fall sports season is fast approaching, but before any goals or touchdowns can be scored, before any races won, some administrative obligations must be met. With that in mind, here are some important dates to remember for all Lake Pend Oreille School District athletes looking to compete in a fall sport.

'Eradication' must be removed from legislation

Monday's milfoil task force meeting was an important one. The state denied Bonner County's request for an additional $638,000 to complete herbicide treatments. They were troubled by the cost per acre and that there was no treatment strategy. The task force discussed different options on how to treat the remaining "hot spots," not totally agreeing on what they are. One member suggested "bending the rules" and resubmitting the grant amendment, requesting funding to use 2,4-D, since it is cheaper, and handing treatment over to the state. She felt the "west end" people wouldn't be happy if there is no additional treatment "down river." Commissioner Todd Crossett and several task force members opposed this idea.

Outrageous increase will only hurt regular people

There has recently come to my attention a proposed whopping (60-90 percent increase) of city dock leases. Who are the people presently leasing these docks — a plumber, electrician, store owner, store clerk, tow truck operator and firefighter, a carpenter and a waitress, a lawyer and two school teachers, a banker and a UPS delivery man, a woman working three jobs (one of which is working with autistic children), a three-generational family and many more. This is a cross-section of what it takes to have a community.

Sandpoint's traffic is nothing but headaches

I recently drove a van full of kids to a field trip in the Sandpoint a few days ago. This was the first trip to Sandpoint in at least two years. You live in a beautiful area of Idaho. Before that, I regularly drove to the Sandpoint area for my job. Two years ago, as I remember, there was a great deal of debate about the Highway 95 bypass. Traffic was becoming a problem in Sandpoint then. Because I enjoyed the Sandpoint area so much when I worked there, I continued to read the local Daily Bee. I was amazed at the continued debate, but with all the politics I dealt with, I didn't expect any less.

A bill SB 1237, Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) introduced in the US Senate under the guise of "national security" trashes basic rights guaranteed by the Constitution by allowing the attorney general at his/her whim based on mere suspicion to prohibit citizens under penalty of federal felony from procurement and possession of ammunition and firearms without disclosure of suspicions, charges, arrest, trial, conviction, and right of appeal. Walkers need to follow rules of the road as well

First, I would like to applaud the people in our community for adopting Sandpoint as a "walking city." But everyone should understand that you should cross streets at the crosswalks. The exercise will do you good. And, if you want to cross the street, look before you step out. With all the activities that happen every weekend in Sandpoint, drivers are already looking in every direction possible. Pedestrians and bicyclists need to be ticketed just like the driver of a motor vehicle.

Ugly pickups in Clark Fork, flag-waving young bicyclists at the children's parade in Sandpoint and plenty of patriotic folks on the west side.
