Giving, gratefulness on display this holiday season
In the midst of the season of giving, I’d like to take a moment to consider what this spirit of generosity looks like in our schools and wider communities. Though this spirit is alive and well in our learning communities year-round, it’s never more visible than during the holiday season. The amount of giving that’s generated in our schools is inspiring, and I’d like to take a moment to give thanks to our educational communities for this generosity.

Panel adds self-testing option for cervical cancer screening
A U.S. health panel says women should have the option of taking their own test samples for cervical cancer screening. The draft recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force issued Tuesday are aimed at getting more people screened for cervical cancer. Women in their 20s should still get a Pap test every three years. But after that — from age 30 to 65 — women can get an HPV test every five years. And those HPV tests can be done using samples collected by the patient herself in a mobile clinic or medical office. Studies show women and doctors collect samples with similar accuracy.

What everyone needs to know about heartburn
Heartburn, in its true sense, has nothing to do with your heart. It’s a painful burning feeling that starts in your sternum and travels up into your throat. Pregnancy, certain foods, alcohol and some drugs can cause it. If it happens occasionally, it’s probably nothing to worry about. But if it occurs a couple of times a week or more, it might be gastroesophageal reflux disease, aka GERD.

Residents, tribe, agencies work toward watershed restoration plan
Agencies and organizations have done remediation work in the watershed in the past. Uleda Creek, which flows into the Middle Fork East River, was once blocked by a log jam installed decades ago as an early piece of timber infrastructure. Over time, the jam caused the creek to flow underground, preventing fish from reaching spawning grounds upstream; agents used explosives to blow out the jam in 2004 in an attempt to enable passage for trout.

Experts may have deciphered Byzantine painter's identity
Crime-solving techniques applied to a medieval illuminated manuscript in Paris may have solved a centuries-old puzzle: The true identity of a leading Byzantine painter who injected a human touch into the rigid sanctity of Orthodox religious art. A contemporary of Giotto, father of Western painting, the artist conventionally known as Manuel Panselinos was equally influential in a totally different tradition. But nothing is known of his life, and scholars believe Panselinos was a nickname that supplanted the real name of the man for whom it was coined. Now, handwriting from a 14th-century illuminated manuscript attributed to painter Ioannis Astrapas has been matched with letters on Panselinos' most famous works.

Science, pseudoscience and the facts of climate change
Monte Heil (Nov. 21, 2024, Daily Bee) falsely claims I said “science proves we are in a climate crisis.” The word “prove” is used in mathematics and logic to signify absolute truth. Scientists eschew the word because scientific information is always incomplete and their findings are, therefore, provisional. Science can show a high probability that something is true. But it cannot “prove” it with unquestionable certainty.

Referendum is ultimate answer to school voucher fight
The voucher vultures are circling the Idaho treasury, expecting to soon have government approval to gorge on money paid into the treasury by hard-working Idahoans. They want the money to be used to subsidize the private/religious education of about 36,000 Idaho kids who don’t go to public schools. If the state subsidized the education of all of those kids at $5,000, each, it would be a $180,000,000 hit on the treasury. The money would come directly out of the public school appropriation. The rural areas where no private/church schools exist would be especially hard hit.
