Religious diversity blooms in once-atheist Cuba
The 1959 revolution led by Fidel Castro installed an atheist, Communist government that sought to replace the Catholic Church as the guiding force in the lives of Cubans. But religion seems omnipresent in Cuba 65 years later. Buddhists, Catholics, Jews, Muslims and Afro-Cuban Santeria practitioners often gather to pray, sing and worship across the Communist-run island. Critics say Cuba is still falling short on religious tolerance. Cuban academics and local religious leaders agree that more strides need to be made. But they also say progress has been achieved. Some call it a time of a Cuban religious revival.

Hutchings is the best choice for North Idaho
Spencer Hutchings’ campaign is overwhelmingly financed by local donations. In contrast, two-thirds of Mark Sauter’s campaign has been financed by big businesses such as BNSF, Idaho Forest Group, the Idaho Association of Realtors, plus various PACs. Considering that Sauter will be spending close to both years of a state rep’s salary for his primary campaign, just who would he be representing? Us citizens, or the corporations who financed him?

'Constitutional sheriff' stance is troubling
Election Day is close. As I was reading the articles on the various contested races, I was struck by the statements made about the candidates in one race. That race is for Bonner County sheriff.
Don't let the Democrats confuse you
Some people say that Democrats are about as rare as honest used car salesmen in North Idaho. If one thing is clear this election cycle, it’s that 90% of the candidates claim to be conservative and 85% of them claim to be Republicans.
What the campaign signs don't say
Extremists running in the Republican primary don't tell us that Dorothy Moon, chair of the Idaho Republican Party says that the GOP is a “private club” where only the faithful can participate and vote. She is dead wrong because Idaho law allows independents to register and vote in the Republican primary on primary election day Tuesday May 21.

US pledges help to track, contain bird flu on dairy farms
U.S. officials pledged nearly $200 million in new spending and other efforts Friday to help track and contain an outbreak of bird flu in the nation's dairy cows. The outbreak of the virus known as Type A H5N1 has spread to 42 herds in nine states. The new funds include $101 million to continue work to prevent, test, track and treat animals and humans potentially affected by the virus. And they include about $28,000 each to help individual farms test cattle and bolster biosecurity efforts to halt the spread of the virus. The risk to the public from the outbreak remains low, officials said.

Matthee will work to help women
A couple of our GOP candidates for the Idaho Legislature have conceded that the abortion ban might have gone “too far” and that it should be “revisited.” Okay, but what are we going to do about it? At the recent legislative candidate forum, I waited — no doubt naively — for specifics, and didn’t get them. I get it; it’s a touchy subject for them who, as members of a badly splintered party, are trying to appeal to all Republican voters.

Cheers, flames as Orthodox worshipers greet 'Holy Fire'
Christian Orthodox worshippers in Jerusalem have thronged the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in one of the most chaotic gatherings in the Christian calendar. Cheers and prayers rang out as candles one by one were lit after reaching through a small opening into Jesus' tomb. Soon, the dim chamber was lit by a constellation of handheld flames as part of the rite of Orthodox Easter week in Jerusalem. Worshipers believe the flame's origin is a miracle. There is not enough space for all who would like to attend, which has caused friction with Israeli authorities in the past. But Saturday's event was joyous, if jostling, and reflective amid the Israel-Hamas war not far away.

Gene long thought to just raise the risk for Alzheimer's may cause some cases
For the first time, researchers have identified a genetic form of late-in-life Alzheimer's disease. Most cases of the mind-robbing disease occur after age 65. A gene called APOE4 has long been considered a key risk factor. But new research says if people inherit two copies of that gene it's not just a risk — it appears to be the underlying cause. About 15% of Alzheimer's patients are thought to carry the gene pair. Scientists say the distinction could have implications for both research and treatment. The findings were published Monday in Nature Medicine.

The Vatican chose to stage its pavilion inside Venice's women's prison, and through a deal with the Italian Justice Ministry, invited inmates to work alongside the artists.

Panel: Mammograms should start at 40
Says change needed to address rising breast cancer rates at younger ages
Regular mammograms to screen for breast cancer should start younger — at age 40. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force announced the updated guidance Tuesday. It also says women ages 40 to 74 should get screened every other year. Previously, it said women could choose to start breast cancer screening as young as 40, with a stronger recommendation that women get the exams every two years starting at age 50. The nudge toward earlier screening is meant to address the increasing incidence of breast cancer among women in their 40s and the higher breast cancer death rate among Black women compared to white women.

Long flu season winds down in US
NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. flu season appears to be over. It was long, but federal health officials and doctors say it was a moderate one. Last week, for the third straight week, medical visits for flu-like illnesses dipped below the threshold for what's counted as an active flu season. Springtime upticks in flu are possible. But other indicators, like hospitalizations and patient testing, also show low and declining activity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there have been at least 34 million illnesses and 24,000 deaths from flu since the beginning of October.
