Sandpoint needs highway bypass
Does Sandpoint need a bypass? I say yes. Is Sand Creek the best way? I really don't know, but it is the only way. To put it in another spot is wrong. The railroad is there, the land is there, and it will only affect one building.

Newsstand theft was not a perfect crime
On most days, we are pretty happy when copies of the Daily Bee disappear out of the 100 or so newspaper racks scattered from the Canadian border to Athol.
Careful cleaning prevents sooty mess
Several days ago I received a call from a family member who was totally frustrated at trying to clean soot covered walls. She had just spent three full days and nights trying to get her walls clean. She said every time she tried to wash the walls, she would end up with long black streaks covering her freshly washed walls. The following information was provided to her:
Tunnel plan offers something for all
I found Skip Pucci's recent guest opinion on placing the bypass underground most interesting. I have seen this sort of solution commonly used in Italy and Austria. Duluth, Minn., has done something vaguely similar in a successful attempt to preserve its waterfront.
Vacation rentals concern just a few
For the past few months, the issue of vacation rentals have been discussed at the Administrative Committee level. With little or no public notice or complaints, committee members have taken it upon themselves to direct the council to address the issue with "instructions to drop the notion of no regulations." It is my opinion that the committee has gone way beyond its position as advisors to the City Council and at the same time done so with almost no factual study or information to base their recommendation.

LPOSD headed in right direction
My hat is now off to the LPOSD school board — batting four for four by my book: Going to the education model, ending an era of nepotism, the timely opening the books to all of us riff-raff citizens for examination (the daily attendance records regarding the emergency levy were truly open to the public before the meeting — a refreshing experience, for sure) and considering this year's emergency levy in the manner and the intent for which the levy process was designed.
Concerns should go to board, not public
The purpose of this letter is not to express my opinion about the Panida issue, but rather to express my concern about how e-mails that were internal to Panida board members were shared by Michael Boge and then used by Bob Gunter and Erik Daarstad to make their point
Hijacking of theater hurts community
It is with sadness that I write an open letter to the community I call home. Not for the actions directed at my wife, but for the hijacking of our historic theater.

History sought on artworks' origins
I'm gathering some history of Sand Creek and have one question that has so far stumped everyone — who painted the fish "sculpture" and the bear paw design on the east bank of Sand Creek, upstream from Cedar Street Bridge? I believe the artwork originated as heating ducts from the Humbird Mill site. To view this creature, either the corner where Second Avenue turns onto Larch or the parking lot of Gas and Go work, although a boat is best. Please call me at 263-1145 or e-mail
Charities pose more danger than weapons
In the past few days the media have been awash with cries that the end of the assault weapons ban provides "the terrorists" with a steady source of weapons. Comments from captured al Queda documents encouraging purchase of weapons in the United States because it is easier than in other countries are gleefully quoted to show the administration's error in refusing to extend the ban and to show the superior wisdom of those supporting it.

Commissioner did not understand appeal
In a recent Daily Bee, I read with great interest the rather long diatribe by Commissioner Jerry Clemons. It proved what I thought all along, that he did not understand my appeal at the Board of Equalization meeting. One of the first questions Commissioner Phillips asked was whether I was appealing the assessed value of my house. My answer was no, I was appealing the land assessment in excess of $150,000/acre.

Elgar is best choice for state representative
I am voting for Steve Elgar as state representative. By checking his Web site, www.steve-elgar.com, you will see he is the most qualified candidate for this position. My personal support goes beyond that. Although Steve is running as a Democrat, he is supported by most of the independent community. He represents the voters and is a citizen first and a party member, second. We all see how most politicians line up like ducks in a row behind party lines. Steve will be our representative because there are not enough independent Democrats to form a row. Remember General Patton's famous words, "When most think the same, few are thinking." We need a few more thinkers in Boise.
Hate is wrong basis for election decisions
As I see it, the presidential election boils down to two camps. In the first camp are the people who love President Bush. In the second camp are the people who hate Bush. The second camp could care less about John Kerry's ideas or past history. They are using him as a weapon to crush President Bush. If this weapon doesn't work, then they will find another, anything to beat Bush. Hate is the wrong motivation for any decision and is doomed to failure.
Did police arrest the wrong driver?
Did the Idaho State Police arrest the wrong driver? I feel Vickie Hamilton, the ambulance driver involved in the accident, should have been taken into custody, had her license revoked and permanently remove her from our highways.

Article missed point for project's denial
The Bee has again reached the epitome of unresearched and erroneous reporting in the article by Lucy Dukes, "Camp planners turning to community" (Aug. 31, 2004). The sheer audacity of printing the quote by George McKinnon, "You want to find people in the area that have the same goals and values" is to question the morals and values of neighboring property owners without knowing who they are or how they devote their lives to and printing it as a "front page/top story" without benefit of an interview to research the other side of an issue. Isn't an editor's responsibility to screen for factual reporting?

Byway harassment is simply shameful
What a shame that there are some folks in this area who find it necessary to harass people for voicing their opinion. I commend the business owners, many of whom do not depend on tourists, for voicing their opinion about the highway in the creek. I, for one and I know of many others, as a way of thanks, will continue to support these community-minded businesses.
