Give up extras before asking for more money
The letters concerning the jail levy presented both sides of the debate, flaws and all. The pro-view seemed to parrot the official line, down to where to vote, keeping kids at home, school, visitation, etc. The con side said no, almost no matter what. Here is a middle-of-the-road view.
Money best spent by building new facility
In the letters and articles I have been reading about the Aug. 4 vote on a juvenile facility in Bonner County, one theme is clear, i.e., no one wants higher taxes and money spent frivolously. I agree, but most of the writers have missed a fact about money for the juvenile facility.

Taxpayers can't afford any more new taxes
Stop — no more new taxes. The county promotes its detention center property tax as $46 per year for a resident with a $150,000 home using the homestead exemption. This, as usual, is only part of the story. What about the small business folks housed in older over-assessed properties?

Facility's costs don't add up for taxpayers
Bonner County voters are being asked to vote on a $6.6 million levy for a juvenile justice facility. The flyer recently sent to voters provided some information on the positive aspects of the levy. The flyer did not justify why a 32-bed facility is being requested when the average usage is about 12. Also the flyer did not give any estimate on the cost of operation, maintenance and staffing of the facility. Given the relatively low usage will there in fact be any cost savings over contracting with Kootenai County. It appears that this facility may actually be more expensive than current costs and will impose an undue additional tax burden on local property owners. It does not appear justifiable to vote for this levy.
Plan saves money, benefits youngsters
Why do I want to vote yes on a new juvenile detention center? Because economically it makes the most sense and is best for our county in the long run.
Unnecessary facility just rips off taxpayers
I received a “tax brochure” in the mail from the Bonner County Probation Office and I presume this is part of the district sttorney’s office so my puzzlement was twice piqued. Since when is it legal for taxpayer-supported government entities to use taxpayer monies demanding more taxpayer money. I refer to the “Bonner County juvenile justice facility” pamphlet. Yep, another two-year levy (property tax increase) on the citizens of this county. Haven’t you had enough taxing or will your apathy continue until your loading a U-Haul trailer in the dead of night to avoid foreclosure on your home because of these tax increases? Looked at your tax bills, we now have five school tax levies; two library; one hospital; one ambulance district (what dmbulance?); and the Independent Highway District. Then there’s the county/city government operations, which are never reduced.
Just say no to yet another onerous tax
Thirty-two bed facility costs $6,600,000. That’s $206,250/bed. — more than many property owner’s houses, who are asked to foot the bill; probably more per bed than Pelican Bay Super Max Prison.
Young people need new detention facility
I think we need to build a new Juvenile detention in Bonner County.

Why can't trains keep quiet during the night?
Living within ear shot of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail crossing on Bottle Bay Road I did a little research and discovered that if there are crossing arms at an intersection where the tracks go cross over a road, which is that way on Bottle Bay Road, then these train jockey’s do not have to blow those annoying horns at all! It is purely up to them if they want to blow the horn or not. So why do they do it? Especially at 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning. Do any Daily Bee readers have any suggestions on how to get them to stop those irritating 30 and 40 second blast we hear daily?

America will rebound despite our politicians

When will Congress do right by people?
If Obama wants to cover everybody and says eliminating waste in health care costs is critical to our nation’s future, then there is no other meaningful solution than a universal coverage single- payer plan.

Why are gas prices so much higher here?
Why is it, that Babe’s Shell gas station on Highway 200 in Ponderay, is always at least 10 cents a gallon less than all the rest of the area gas stations? This has been going on for months, so I have to believe that the other stations are, what, in collusion, to keep prices higher. I hope I’m not getting Babe in trouble here, but we all know that Coeur d’Alene is always lower than Sandpoint, and 40 miles can’t make that much of a rise in price, so what’s going on here? This is about the tenth letter to the editor about the price of gas in the last six months, and no reply, except for the extra mileage to Sandpoint. How about an answer!

Hospital staff delivered top-notch health care
After living in Bonner County for the past four years, and hearing mixed tales of quality of service at Bonner General Hospital, I recently had an opportunity to test this service, when last week, I had a partial right knee replacement, at the hospital. I have had four other surgeries on both knees, three of those in Seattle with a surgeon who used to be an orthopedic surgeon for the Seattle Seahawks, and the original surgery in 1978 from a surgeon in Los Angeles who used to be head surgeon for the Los Angeles Rams. I had researched both surgeons long before the surgeries, finding them to be, at the time, cutting edge (pardon the pun) doctors for this type of joint repair.

Canada is used as an example if we try to change our system - people unable to choose their doctor, people dying in hospital halls, and one horror story after another, that our friends from the north must endure.

Henry's speech worth hearing again
No man thinks more highly than I do of the patriotism, as well as abilities, of the very worthy gentlemen who have just addressed the House.
