Some 400,000 high-resolution digital photographs were taken with drones and other cameras over four weeks when no one was in the world-famous basilica. The first new guidelines on stroke prevention in 10 years from the American Heart Association include recommendations for people and doctors that reflect a better understanding of who gets strokes and why, along with new drugs that can help reduce risk. Stroke was the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. in 2023, and more than half a million Americans have a stroke every year. All Saints' Day put focus on spiritual, not spooky
Christians in many countries around the world are celebrating All Saints' Day, a somber and spiritual day in the church's liturgical calendar that shares pagan roots with Halloween. Believers and non-believers alike will gather on Friday with family, sweep fallen leaves off the graves of their loved ones and cover them with votive candles and flowers. The word "Halloween" derives from "All Hallows Eve," which means the eve of All Hallows, or All Saints' Day. Scholars believe that the spectral aspects of Halloween emerged primarily from an ancient Celtic festival that occurred during the harvest season. As Christianity spread, many pagan rituals were adopted and adapted to the new faith to be more attractive to converts.

People prone to seasonal depression are bracing themselves as winter approaches. Many have found strategies to get through the dark days. Depression that begins in the fall and eases in the spring or summer is called seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. Doctors recommend starting the morning by sitting near a special device that emits light about 20 times brighter than regular indoor light. Working with a therapist can help people with seasonal depression identify and modify unhelpful thoughts. And doctors recommend keeping a regular sleep schedule and walking outside, even on cloudy days.

'Pan de muerto' brings sweetness to Day of the Dead
"Pan de muerto," or "bread of the dead," is freshly baked in Mexico ahead of Day of the Dead celebrations. Shaped like a bun, decorated with bone-like bread pieces and covered in sugar, it's a delight for locals until the first week of November, when Mexicans build altars or "ofrendas" and visit local cemeteries to remember their departed loved ones. These celebrations coincide with the crop season, which provides pan de muerto a spiritual, symbolic meaning. If its decorations resemble bones, it's because Mesoamerican worldviews regarded them as the origin of life.
Closed primaries put politics to extremes
Closed primaries, in states that are monopolized by one party (like Idaho or Oregon), allow relatively small, highly motivated, extreme groups to dominate their parties by allowing those groups to focus all of their resources on the primary election rather than the general election where they have to appeal to a broader electorate.
Open primaries make absolutely no sense
I guess I just must not understand the rationale behind open primaries. When I look up the definition of an open primary, google says, the primary election is an election by the political parties to nominate their candidates for the general election ballot. No one is elected in a primary election. Everyone gets to vote in the general election for the candidate they would like to win that election.
