At an old tavern, some ghostly regulars visited
A large black crow swooped from the roof of the Fort Ground Grill onto River Road, then flew into the ochre foliage of a nearby tree as a magpie cackled among the rustling leaves, setting an eerie mood. Although the historic 1907 building has been quiet for a couple years, its resident spirits may still be making themselves known the way former employees remember. “I definitely think there’s spirits here, I really do," said Diane Beck, who worked at the Fort Ground Grill from 2016 until it closed in 2022.

We need ranked choice voting
Do we want to send our District 1 U.S. Representative to Washington — with only 18% of the vote? Under the present system, that is possible in this Nov. 5 Russ Fulcher (incumbent) race — four candidates on ballot and two certified write-ins, totaling six.

Proposition 1 is the wrong choice for Idaho
Recently, a letter to the editor in favor of Proposition 1 explained that Rank Choice Voting (RCV) in a conservative rural district in Maine in 2018, enabled a Democrat to be elected after two rounds of voting. This is exactly why RCV is wrong for Idaho. We want conservatives in office.
Rasor is not the right choice for Idaho
Point 1: The Daily Bee asked Cornel Rasor to name “the most significant issue” for North Idaho voters. He said it was preventing abortions. He means with “no exceptions.” So if a woman is raped, she must give birth. If a doctor says an abortion will save a woman's life, Rasor wants the legislature to say no.

Trump, Rasor are good Christian candidates
It is a mystery to me why anyone would believe the liberal left. They are such horrendous liars. For example, they say “Bring back our doctors” when they actually mean “Bring back abortion.” And do you know of any doctors who have left Idaho because they cannot perform abortions? I don’t.

Prop 1 gives freedom to choose who will govern

Want to vote as Republican? Register as one
Maybe I’m confused, but I remember from civics class that the primary election was where political party members voted for a candidate to represent their party in the general election. When one makes the choice to join a political party, then one agrees to rules of that party for their primary. When one registers as independent or unaffiliated, then one makes that choice to accept the limitations of that decision. If one really wants to vote in the Republican primary election, there already exists a simple remedy: register as a Republican.

Peek shows how brain cleans out waste
A unique peek inside the human brain may help explain how it clears away waste like the kind that leads to Alzheimer's disease. Brain cells make a lot of waste and research a decade ago showed the brains of mice harbor special plumbing to flush out that cellular trash — especially during sleep. But only now have researchers finally spotted the same kind of trash removal going on in the brains of living people. The study published Monday by Oregon Health & Science University is a small step to better understanding the link between brain waste clearance and human health.
Larson will represent all of LD1
My family has been Republican ever since I can remember. The values of the Party of Lincoln run strong. Yes, there were some bumps when the politics of Joe McCarthy dominated. But for the most part we stayed on that commonsense path that supported local institutions that promoted the general welfare and policies that opened the door to opportunity.

Joe Biden has a visible breakdown
Recently at a presidential town hall, Joe Biden swayed and sang for 39 minutes, lip-synced “Ave Maria,” three times, and danced to the 1980s anthem for young gay men, YMCA. His health records, seven years ago said, “high cholesterol and obese.” Both are life-threatening. He won’t release current records. Visibly declining and deranged he shouldn’t be running for president. Wait a minute! Joe Biden? Darn it, I meant Donald Trump.

"At a recent press conference, former president Donald J. Trump argued that receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom is “much better” than getting the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest award given to U.S. service members. Telling him abortion is exceedingly rare in Idaho, I said until legislators overruled the will of the majority to prohibit abortion in this state, the issue generally was not on Idahoans’ radar.

Which system really leads to 'rigged elections?'
A lot of signs are popping up proclaiming “rigged choice voting” and urging voters to vote "no" on Proposition 1. Which election system is “rigged?” Is it "open primaries with ranked choice voting" or our current “closed primary” system? I contend it is the current system while Proposition 1 would give voters more choice.

Prop 1 is deceptive and misleading
I’m writing to shine a light on the dishonest propaganda being distributed about the upcoming ballot measure, Proposition 1. Prop 1 is being deceptively framed as a measure to promote open primaries.
Prop 1 is ranked choice voting by another name
Proposition 1 is actually ranked choice voting as enacted in the state of Alaska. It is a disaster for conservative voters because after the initial open vote (which in itself is a great idea) the votes are ranked, and then recounted. This enables the losers to move up the list of selections. In Alaska, this resulted in a liberal candidate being elected in their conservative state.

A faith is on the edge of vanishing in Georgia after being exiled from Russia centuries ago
Members of a pacifist Christian sect that emerged in 18th century Russia were expelled to the fringes of the Russian Empire almost two centuries ago for rejecting the Orthodox church and refusing to serve in Czar Nicholas I's army. Some Doukhobors established 10 villages in Georgia, where they continued to preach nonviolence and worshipped without priests or church rituals. But the sect continued to suffer persecution under successive Russian and Soviet regimes. Today, only around 100 remain in two remote mountain villages in Georgia. Young and old, they are doing their best to preserve their culture and traditions of prayer and nonviolence.

Love seeks good for all people
I was watching an NFL game Monday night between the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets. I've been a Bills fan since the 1990s — when they went to four straight Super Bowls and didn't win one. “Wide right” went down in football infamy when Scott Norwood missed the winning field goal.

Density can make it harder to spot cancer on a mammogram
A new U.S. rule requires mammography centers to inform women about their breast density. The information isn't entirely new for some women because many states already had similar requirements. Dense breasts can make it harder to spot cancer on a mammogram. The best advice for a woman with dense breasts is to discuss with her doctor the pros and cons of additional screening methods. Researchers are studying better ways to detect cancer in women with dense breasts. So far, there's not enough evidence for a broad recommendation for additional screening.

Ulmer Münster is world's tallest church — for now
The Ulmer Münster in southern Germany is the world's tallest church. For now, anyway. The Gothic-style Lutheran church's reign began in 1890 and is expected to end next year. That's when Spain's La Sagrada Familia Basilica's "Tower of Jesus Christ" is set to be completed. At an eventual 172.5 meters high, the Catholic basilica in Barcelona will inch out the Ulmer Münster by about 11 meters.

Panel tackles Proposition 1 at N. Idaho forum
Panelists discuss open primaries, ranked-choice voting initiative
A concern about ranked-choice voting is that it splits the number of votes from the majority party and paves the way to victory for minority candidates. Luke Mayville recently had this discussion with someone who asked if that's what happened in the 1992 presidential election when Bill Clinton won with 42% of the vote because Ross Perot ran against George H.W. Bush, splitting the conservative vote. "The answer to that is if they had had ranked-choice voting, it would have solved that problem," he said.
