Group rallies to replace grandstands
SANDPOINT — As the calendar flipped over into the 1960s, songs like “Travelin’ Man” by Ricky Nelson were playing on the radio, a Volkswagen Beetle would have set you back about $1,100, the Peace Corps was brand new and so were the grandstands at War Memorial Field’s Barlow Stadium.
School levy favors the wealthy
With regard to the school levy, there is a dynamic at work I would like you to consider. Because of the changes in the housing market, families who have lived in the area for a long time have seen the values of their homes triple or quadruple since the time they bought them (even when adjusting for the dips they’ve taken lately). Very few or none of these same families have tripled their income in the same time period. Because the levy is based on the value of property, this means there has been a disproportionate shift in the burden (in terms of percentage of income) to the families who make less money.
Blame teachers unions for lowered standards
We read all the hype about what a great idea this school levy appears to be. First let’s discard all the emotional diversions: “It’s for the children,” “It’s an investment in our future,” “Our school system is not broken, it just needs more money.”

I hear every day that we citizens are not supporting our students as much as we should. I believe we have a responsibility to our students to provide them with the opportunity to reach their goals. Cigarette tax hike could save lives
I agree with Dr. Heraper’s letter calling for no new taxes, with one exception: the proposed increased tax on cigarettes. Dr. Heraper, if inadvertently, makes a strong case for the tax increase. Quote: “I quit smoking when Mr. Obama put in place an additional 62 cents per pack tax.”

Levy is way to make a meaningful difference
It seems to me that there are few times in our lives when we can make a meaningful difference in the world, in our community and for our children. Today may be one. When we look around at the virulent discord, the budgetary impasses, it seems to me that we need to step up and fill that void. We can do this by educating our kids, instilling values and moving forward in a positive way. Vote yes on the levy March 8, for the kids, for yourself, and for all of our futures.

Helping our students will make us stronger
We would like to express our support for the replacement supplemental-instructional levy which will be placed before the voters on March 8. Our family has been blessed to be a part of Lake Pend Oreille School District for the last four years, and we will support the district and schools just as the staff of Southside Elementary School has so greatly supported our children.
Be careful lest you be branded a hypocrite
Those of you of the liberal persuasion may be outraged at the idea that Idaho is in the process of nullification of Obama’s health care bill as described in the Feb 12 issue of the Daily Bee. You should be.

(Folks, it will not be long before we can get out and enjoy the beauty and history of Bonner County. I want to recommend to you a short trip I took with Dale Selle not too long before his death. On, Feb. 6, a letter was published and lent support to President Barack Obama apparently triggered by his recent State of the Union speech. Why did trooper get a free pass?
It’s a pretty sad day in Bonner County — more corruption in law enforcement. The ISP trooper gets a free pass for poaching. I have been convicted of a misdemeanor for driving under the influence and they made me go to drug court, 30 days in jail supervised probation for two years. Oh, the most important logic I got was accountability.

Levy would replace one leaving tax rolls
This upcoming levy replaces an expiring one supporting both academic and athletic extracurricular activities. Some say these items are not worth continued support. Rather, these are vital to both our local students and our economy. These activities define the heart and soul of a person which ultimately both employers and colleges use to differentiate between prospective candidates.
Wampus Cats questing for state hardware
CLARK FORK — Teams that hang their hat on defense often fare well at the state basketball tournament for this simple reason: While offense and shooting can often run hot and cold, defense is more effort-based, and far less likely to disappear when the pressure mounts.
Now is not the time to stop supporting kids
Warren Buffett said the best investment one can make is to educate oneself. Since the approximately 3,500 LPOSD students do not have a say in whether or not their education system can sustain itself financially, let alone to what extent it maintains or degrades its current level of service, its up to us (again) to decide with our levy vote.
For the good of all, let's support levy

Many compassionate people are facing a dilemma regarding the proposed Medicaid cutbacks that affect children and adults with disabilities. I’ve been unsure how to respond to them and address their concerns — until now.

No new taxes includes those on cigarettes
To tax or not to tax, that is the questions — cigarettes, that is. I quit smoking when Mr. Obama put in place an additional 62 cents per pack tax. His excuse for the tax was to fund his S-CHIP socialized medical program for “children” up to 26 years of age. That was about 21 months ago. There is no way I will ever voluntarily contribute to a socialized medicine program.

The whole world was watching on Super Bowl Sunday as a singer who would get lost in a phone booth disgustingly tried to sing our national anthem.
Levy proposal is a necessity, not luxury
I am a parent and a homeowner with four children in the Lake Pend Oreille School District. I want to express my support for the upcoming levy. I find it troubling that we need to vote on a levy every two years simply to keep our schools functioning. In other states this levy would automatically be renewed and be a normal part of our property taxes. In a perfect world, the federal and state governments would budget for the cost of the education our country guarantees our children. This world is not perfect.

Prescription drug information should be taken seriously
This isn’t a joke. The drug information for a diabetes medicine said that the possible side effects might include drowsiness or sleeplessness and diarrhea or constipation. The anti-depression tablets’ enclosure said that they could cause melancholy. The sleep aid said that it might bring about insomnia. So, how seriously should those disclosures be taken? Very seriously, very seriously indeed.

Still business as usual in the county
Seriously, I thought the message was clear. I think it’s time to stop the do-do and clean up the kennel. Marie Scott and her croni-capitalism needs to go away. Her saying she can hire part-time employees without approval is wrong as well as deceitful. Anybody who doesn’t smell a stink in hiring without the commissioners’ approval and also hiring Joe Young — who was voted down because people didn’t want him — has their nose plugged.

Support the message of working together
I thought President Barack Obama gave an excellent State of the Union address recently.
