Make road use agreements, standards mandatory
Maintenance of Baldy Mountain Road is a classic example of numerous "private roads without any standards" that our commissioners have favored developers with over these past years. The approvals are a "gift of reduced costs" to the developer and a guaranteed higher cost to the property owner whenever road standards and accessibility issues rear their heads. We have too many private roads now that fire, medical emergency and school buses will never be able to access.
No do-over on resignation
Does Larry Craig deserve a do-over?
Craig must take responsibility for actions
Sen. Craig pleads guilty, doesn't seek council and when his recent arrest is later disclosed to the public, he adamantly announces, "I'm not gay." I'd agree he probably isn't gay, yet soliciting anonymous sex in a public restroom is classic sexual addiction behavior.

ITD caught with its hand in the cookie jar
Last Friday, ITD received their draft Section 404 permit from the Corps for the bypass project. The part of the story that has yet to be told is that, in the process, they have been caught with their hand in the cookie jar. By this I speak to the fact that ITD management deliberately conspired (hint, I've got the letters) to submit a significantly inflated estimate ($267 million - $425 million) for a 3,900-foot long tunnel alternative to the Corps of Engineers when we had been actively advocating the study of a 1,200-foot tunnel alternative understood to be in the range of $100 million to $125 million.
Politicians, generals are lying to Americans
The long-heralded report by Gen. David Petraeus didn't surprise me in its content. Asking a military leader to report on the war in Iraq is like asking a used car salesman if there's anything wrong with the car. There's a certain self-interest involved.

Nurses deserve the community's support

It was an enormous success and everything goes directly back to Bonner County veterans in need.
Water adjudication is a bad idea for county
Thanks to Gov. Otter, our local senators and representatives and concerned citizens who petitioned the governor for reining in the rogue Department of Water Resources in its devious attempt to get a foot in the door in Bonner County.

Don't be pressured into buying a washer before you are ready
With fall just around the corner, most of us are getting our homes ready for the long winter months. One of the things my company does is clean. We use a variety of tools and equipment to do that. One of the items I really like to use is the pressure washer.
Nordic walking brings whole new level of fitness
The main complaint shared by Nordic walkers is that people often ask them, "What the heck are you doing with those poles?" Or, worse, "Hey, where's the snow?"

Media sensationalism was inappropriate
In June, my daughter was in wreck with her daughter. I have issues with the Bee's account of this and the use of unsubstantiated facts. I'm only allowed 250 words to refute their story.

'Local muscle' needed to fix real traffic issues
The rationale for the bypass rests upon one main issue with which I agree, getting the long-haul trucks out of town. We are told by ITD that the tax revenue generated by these trucks is essential to Idaho and our roads. I say "horse manure." ITD can't even repaint the stripes north of town to accommodate current traffic flow issues.
LEGAL NOTICE
Idaho Department of Fish and Game has confirmed unusual declines in the 2007 breeding ground counts of sage-grouse in the Magic Calley north of the Snake River. The 2007 counts were 55% below the 2002-2006 five-year average. In addition, the Murphy Complex Fire burned over 460,000 acres in Idaho including important sage-grouse habitat in eastern Owyhee County.
Resolve issues at the bargaining table
I am writing this letter in response to the full page ads being submitted as "letters" to Sheryl Rickard, BGH CEO.
Sandpoint deserves a proper bypass
The Sand Creek Byway was originally proposed more than 50 years ago. Since the 1950s, area transportation needs, highway safety standards and environmental laws have changed dramatically. In addition, Sandpoint has transitioned to a tourism-based economy. The Sand Creek Byway is an outdated design that no longer meets area transportation requirements or environmental regulations.
Aquatic habitat center is area's newest jewel
The WaterLife Discovery Center is, in some ways, still a construction site.

'Red herrings' are not doing anyone any good
Mr. Wynhausen, I believe that NICAN and its predecessors over the years had a large hand in nixing a byway. They refuse to acknowledge polls and votes showing a majority endorse the Sand Creek route, calling us ignorant and that they know what's best.
LEGAL NOTICE
The Idaho Fish and Game Director was informed by the Bureau of Fisheries that there is a need to protect adult kokanee from harvest in Coeur d'Alene Lake. These fish are vital to maintaining future kokanee populations in the lake. The need of this rule change is to protect kokanee spawners, which are at very low numbers and are vulnerable to angling, to allow for adequate rerproduction and recruitment of future year classes of kokanee.
Lee Remsburg
Born Edgar Daniel Lee Remsburg on Feb. 11, 1930, in Charbonneau, N.D., to Margaret May (Davis) and George Edgar Remsburg. Lee (as he was known by his family and friends) spent most of his growing years with his grandparents, Daniel Davis and Pearl Delight Davis.Lee passed away on Sept. 1, 2007, while doing what he loved so much in life — roaming around the mountains of northern Idaho in search of wildlife to photograph and reveling in Nature's majesty.Lee loved the outdoors with a passion unparalleled. He also worked earlier in life as a cab driver, a creamery worker, and as a driver for fuel oil deliveries in the Sandpoint area.Lee was always in the outdoors where he loved to fish and hunt. He loved to photograph nature in all its glory, particularly animals and scenery. While living in Sagle, he even developed his own film in his darkroom for pictures he took at weddings, reunions, and such. He briefly took footage for the news services in Spokane and many of his photographs that he took while on the job were used by the Forest Service. His desire was to have his ashes divided among his children to be spread by each in a place of shared happiness where the elk roam.He was preceded in life by his longtime companion, Bobbi Burnside of Post Falls, Idaho, in the fall of 2005.He is survived by the mother of his children, Edna Lindstrom of Lewiston, Idaho, and seven children, Leanna Goodrow of Bovill, Idaho, Daniel Remsburg of Woodland Park, Colo., Dale Remsburg of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, David Remsburg of Culdesac, Idaho, Donald Remsburg of Spirit Lake, Idaho, Dana Remsburg of Moscow, and Leona Blaker of Lewiston. Heavy-handed officer railroaded senator
I am a former resident of Sandpoint. I have very rarely supported the positions of Sen. Larry Craig, however, that doesn't mean that I believe he deserves to be treated like he is in this current situation involving his arrest in Minneapolis.

Arrest has nothing to do with politics
Hold it folks, the arrest and conviction of Sen. Larry Craig had nothing to do with politics. Mr. D. Irving's rage against Mr. Keyes is just that, rage. Mr. Irving suggests the arrest was a Democrat cover-up, but the facts prove otherwise. Let's look at the case in light of the truth. Mr. Craig entered a restroom on his own, and was not led there by the officer. Then again, the officer may have been handsome and Craig may have followed him into the restroom. The officer did not entice Sen. Craig to put his foot all the way over into the officer's stall, nor did the officer cause Sen. Craig to place his hand completely under the partition (palm up), and to wave for the officer to come on over.
Craig held himself above nation's laws
The discussions about Sen. Larry Craig's recent actions are covering the wrong topic. It is known that the American people do not care if their senators break the law — just look at Rep. Patrick Kennedy, who kept office after driving drunk and crashing, a violation of the law that also put individuals at risk, unlike Craig's actions.
