Do your own research, follow common sense
The letter (Daily Bee, July 23) by Sandpoint's climate denier-in-chief was to put it mildly, somewhat of a revelation as to what his faith teaches. Or at least how those teachings relate to his "opinion." I never knew that God and Jesus taught their faithful to belittle and denigrate others for their honest views of the world and human affairs. Especially when they state what they believe based on the vast majority of scientific evidence and their own observations; in this case climate change and its likely cause.

Scholar's church closes its doors
First Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, has held the last service of its 156-year history. It's among many U.S. churches that close their doors each year. But there's a poignant twist in this story. First Baptist's pastor, Ryan Burge, spends much of his time as a researcher, documenting the dramatic decline in religious affiliation in recent decades. With more Americans abandoning religious affiliation, it's hard to grow and sustain a church, Burge says. He hopes his research, and his personal experience, can provide comfort to other pastors of struggling churches. "This is not all your fault," Burge tells them.

Possibilities, opportunities and choosing our path
For the past 10 years, July recalls my mother's end-of-life journey. That's the way it is when you lose someone. The calendar is forever changed. Last January, our daughter's family simply moved. But it was far enough that we wouldn't be seeing each other like we had when they lived locally. For me, it felt like a chain of “mini deaths.”
Up to 70 percent of people with asthma don’t know it
When we think of asthma, we tend to think of children. I know that I do, since my brother had severe asthma as a child, but then lucky for him, he outgrew it. Anyway, it’s apparently not uncommon for adults – from 20 to 70 percent – to have asthma or COPD (a subject for another day) and not know it.

Kedian is part of a clinical trial at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona that aims to expand the potentially lifechanging transplants for people who can't breathe, swallow or speak on their own because of laryngeal injuries or cancer. Early results of the transplant were published Tuesday.

Peter Franklin Goullette, 30, had appealed his conviction to the state's high court, arguing the district court erred when it accepted his Alford plea since it failed to inquire into the factual basis of his guilty plea. He also contended the court was obligated to inquire into the factual basis of his plea since both the report he submitted and his attorney's comments raised doubt as to his guilt.

Missing this opportunity will increase our reliance on foreign labor, threatening our national and economic security. The 'Pied Piper' of the Pend Oreille
The story behind the photo starts with a yard sale in summer 2022, when Bill, a retired professor from Ohio, picked up a cheap set of bagpipes. When he was a child, his family lived in Scotland, and his father played the Great Highland Bagpipes. Bill had always dreamed of playing, so he emailed me at the Albeni Falls Pipes and Drums of North Idaho. Could I help him learn? His family has been coming to North Idaho every summer since his grandparents bought a cabin in the 1950s. I assured him that I would do everything I could, and, If he studied and practiced, he would see his dream fulfilled.
