In July, nonprofit Kaniksu Land Trust set out to change that. USPS relocating Ponderay post office
The U.S. Postal Service has announced it plans to move the Ponderay post office, currently located at 296 Fourth St., to the old Horizon Credit Union, 480 Bonner Mall Way. The new location is about a mile away from the current post office.

LEAP project nets workforce housing grant
A Priest River affordable housing project has received a $30,000 grant from a regional credit union and its partners. Working with partners, STCU helped secure nearly $200,000 in late 2024 for critically needed workforce housing projects in Spokane County and North Idaho. Among them is LEAP Housing, which received a $30,000 grant for The Village at River View Ridge, a six-unit workforce housing project in western Bonner County.

POCD hosting plant sale, native species workshop
This special event is designed to help community members, including those purchasing plants through the sale, learn the best practices for successful planting and approach project design. The workshop will be held Saturday, April 5, at the Camas Center in Usk, Washington. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m., and the event will run until 3 p.m.

County OKs library boundary changes
A boundary line adjustment between the county's two library districts was formally approved by Bonner County commissioners at a meeting last week to approve the issue. The proposal realigns the boundary line between the East Bonner County and West Bonner library districts to match those of the Lake Pend Oreille and West Bounty County school districts. While the measure was unanimously approved by the two library districts on Aug. 20, 2024, that decision needed to be codified by the commissioners. The Board of County Commissioners approved the measure in a unanimous 3-0 vote.

The Idaho Public Utilities Commission recently announced that it would allow a northern Idaho water utility to increase the rates it charges customers to provide water service. While CDS Stoneridge Utilities initially asked for a rate increase that averaged 261 percent, the commission approved a general rate increase of 18.6 percent. The utility serves approximately 384 residential and commercial customers in the Blanchard area.

Reward up to $20,000 offered for information on each of three Washington wolf killings
Gray wolves are considered endangered under Washington state law and federally protected in the western two-thirds of the state
On Oct. 6, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife investigated the death of an adult male gray wolf that occurred east of the Klickitat River near U.S. Highway 142 and Goldendale in the south-central part of the state. The wolf died from starvation after it was shot and had to drag itself to a water source without the use of its back legs, according to the agency.

Lakes Commission funds economic study

It’s winter, so be careful about the falls
A few months ago, I got up from my favorite chair, unaware that our cat, Sox, was next to the chair. As I turned, I stepped on Sox. He ran and I fell over the rocking chair a few feet away from where I sat. The chair tumbled along with me. I bruised a few ribs in the crash but otherwise was fine. A first fall for me, and no more since then!

U.S. will keep protecting Rocky Mountain grizzly bears
Gov. Little critical of decision, calls for Fish and Game to find 'rationale' behind it
Federal officials also said they will reclassify the grizzly’s status so that ranchers would be able to shoot bears that are killing livestock. Officials will end protections for the animals in states where they’re no longer found, including California, Colorado, New Mexico and Oregon. The fearsome bruins have been protected as a threatened species across the lower 48 states since 1975. Officials during President-elect Donald Trump’s first term sought to eliminate those protections, but were blocked in court.

Gas prices remain low
In a surprise twist, Idaho gas prices plateaued around $3.60 per gallon for most of the summer, in part due to stable crude oil prices and steady refinery production, which helped offset increased fuel demand, according to AAA. Pump prices in the Gem State have been steadily falling since September.

I don’t know about you but I am sick and tired of hearing about this murderer Bryan Kohberger. He brutally murdered four college students, Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin by breaking in and stabbing them to death at their off-campus home in Moscow Idaho, while they slept in November 2022.

SHS to create JROTC program
Sandpoint High School has been awarded the ability to create a Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program in 2025-2'6, one of a few schools nationally awarded this distinction. JROTC is one of the country’s largest citizenship and character development programs for young people. It’s considered an elective class, meaning students choose to take it as part of their course load. There is no military obligation, and the program is not a military preparation class. JROTC will not limit students from participating in extracurricular sports, band, student government or any other club.

Saturday open house seeks input on possible options
To that end, the Panida is hosting an open house on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with an exhibit of various plans for lobby improvements. Annual event proves fun way to kickstart the new year
In all, 309 people braved the cool temperatures, cloudy skies and scattered snow to jump into Lake Pend Oreille to kick off the new year with a plunge into its freezing waters. Another 300 or so people — warmly dressed in thick winter coats, boots and gloves — cheered from the nearby shoreline of Sandpoint City Beach.

Firefighters extinguish locomotive blaze
Firefighters responded to the intersection of Diagonal Road and Massif for a report of a BNSF locomotive on fire. Engine 61 arrived to find fire coming from the engine compartment of the locomotive. Crews were able to extinguish the fire in just over an hour, according to the Timberlake Fire Protection District.
