Potter short on details on tunnel proposal
Mr. Potter, as you are a newcomer to this area, I wonder whether you have had enough time to acclimate yourself to your new environment. The very reasons that attracted you to Sandpoint should be your motivation to keep it as much as possible like it was, before all the development started. Or, perhaps you see opportunities to change it to suit your personal agenda. I hope your investment in The Seasons proves equitable. Under the circumstances, it's understandable that you would not want the byway in your backyard. Perhaps you should have considered the reality of a byway before you made your purchase.

Center thanks person in advance for returning coat
We would like to thank the person in advance for bringing the coat back to the Sagle Senior Thrift Store. You will know that it isn't your coat because it had car keys that didn't belong to your car, a cell phone that isn't your number, and an envelope that has money that isn't yours in the pocket. Also, the coat wasn't paid for as it went out the door. Whoever you are, we would like you to know that we do give a lot back out to the community. All you need to do is please ask. We try to serve God by serving others.

Flags capture interest, attention of drivers
Sandpoint might take a look at how another well-known Idaho recreation town, Ketchum, helps main-street crosswalk users. Each non-signalled crosswalk has a set of day-glow orange hand flags in pole racks on each side of the street: pick one up, wave it as you cross, and put it in the rack on the other side. Sure gets driver attention, helps the crosser make eye-contact with the drivers, and makes it fun for kids, etc., when they cross. Yes, they must lose some flags, but hey, that's no biggie …

Tips help you use your medications wisely
Medications can cure diseases and alleviate symptoms. They can relieve pain. They make it possible for people with long-term illness to lead healthier lives. Medications are also powerful chemicals so it is essential that they be properly used. This means that every patient must receive the right medication, in the right amount, and at the right time.

Will the bypass ever be built in community?
Back in the 1950s, when they first started talking about a highway bypass around Sandpoint, I was a young woman. Now I'm a much older woman — still no bypass. They're not building the pyramids, for crying out loud. Maybe if I lived to be as old as Methusaleh I'd get to see a bypass built, but I'm not betting any money on it.

There are many things wrong in this world. One of them is our apparent inability as humans to respect, listen to, even love people we strongly disagree with. It's a fault, everyone has it. It's decidedly unchristian, decidedly not nice. This was really underlined for me during the last county commissioners race.

No man can take away our inalienable rights
Jan. 15 is upon us and it is a dark day for our once great republic. We are told that we are not to judge a man according to the color of his skin, then we give honor to a man because of the color of his skin. Martin Luther King Jr. was, at best, a man of questionable character. The FBI files have been sealed for years, so that by the time truth is released, the myth will have more validity than reality; so what is new?
Responses vary when you say you want to be a writer
Some occupations deserve and receive lots of respect and praise — like being a doctor, teacher or engineer. You will receive hugs, kisses, admiration, wows, even a bow toward the east. Telling friends and relatives and others that you want to be a writer — maybe not even a good one, but still a writer. I'm excited about the possibilities — others, on the other hand, after I tell them, will grunt and walk away shaking their heads violently. Some will start clearing their throat as if it hadn't been cleared since the Mayflower was tied to our coast. There also are those who do all the talking. I tried to tell them, but they never stopped talking.

Kellogg tells terrific tale about the Rev. Mr. Ford
(I became acquainted with Robert Kellogg when I was asked to critique a book he was writing called, "50 True Tales of Northern Idaho." He had a colorful career in Sandpoint: Working with Norm Bauer at KSPT radio, writing for the Sandpoint News Bulletin, manager of the Panida Theater for Floyd Gray, just to name a few. He began researching old newspapers when he was with Lauren Pietsch at the News Bulletin, and today's story comes from that research. In his story, "Westward Ho on the Pend Oreille River," Bob, in his story, gives us a glimpse of how our waterways were used almost 100 years ago.)

More and more older adults are embracing the benefits of an active lifestyle. It seems that they have discovered that exercise and eating right can help blur the lines between 40 and 50, or between 50 and 60. Aging is suddenly not what it used to be.

Sandpoint claims win in duals
SANDPOINT — Sandpoint has a small group of wrestlers that coach Mike Randles calls their 'usual guns', and they expect to win those battles. But for them to win in duals, they need help from the younger wrestlers, and freshman Scott Paramore stepped up and delivered, wrestling through injuries to record pivotal pins as Sandpoint swept Lake City and Timberlake in duals action Tuesday at Sandpoint High School.

King's dream of equality is one we all should embrace
There are few speeches more powerful, more ingrained in the American consciousness, that speak to the need for equality for all than Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

Cause, sin of war, continue from within Oval Office
The transgressions and failings of our leadership are being paid for with the lives and innocence of our child warriors, Iraqi citizens and our diminishing national treasure. As a patriotic American, these facts cause me pain, anger and frustration. These feelings plus confusion, anguish, aggravation and powerlessness to influence change are affecting many Americans.
Why can't we work for the good of people, not politics?
Mr. Wynhausen, in your recent letter to the editor (Nov. 10), you inadvertently answered your own question. I am relieved that you do not represent the very people you live amongst. Your childish reaction to losing your bid for office supports the fact that you were not the right person for the job. But, then you took it a step further. You suggest that we might be country bumpkins, out of touch with reality, short on attention span, and have allowed fresh air to go to our heads. To me, it reaffirms that you are the one who is disconnected from the people you wanted to represent.

Pend Oreille Lodge filled lives with warmth, special memories
Just a few days ago, I was thinking about the time that buildings looked like real buildings instead of concrete bee hives or massive territorial prisons. Almost every town had nearby a place, or places, that had warmth and character that welcomed locals and visitors alike. The Sandpoint area is no exception for a short drive, or boat ride, took many to a show place along the banks of Pend Oreille Lake. It was there that one found the beautiful Pend Oreille Lodge. The lodge has passed from the pages of history but many people still remember the good times they had at this special place by the lake.

Cholesterol: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Trying to keep up with the latest news on cholesterol — what's good, what's bad and what's ugly — might be confusing and even overwhelming. Just when we've switched over to margarine from butter and egg substitutes have taken pride of place on our breakfast table, the latest news comes along to dispute what we were told the week before. Therefore, it might be best just to stick with the basics.
Is your dryer all wet? Make sure vent is clear and clean
In 2006, my company restored two homes hit by fires caused by clothes dryers. Most of us don't think about our washers and dryers after we have them installed. In this week's articles, I thought I would discuss some basics in clothes dryer care.

Protect woodland caribou and preserve their habitat
In commenting on the snowmobile ban in the designated caribou habitat recovery area, first I'd like to say that I really enjoy skiing and snowmobiling in the Selkirk Mountains. Second, when considering the plight of the woodland caribou, I know that we humans have all the options. Businesses and people are very adaptable. We can reorganize, retool or even relocate.

Political pendulum starting to swing to the left in Idaho
Idaho Republicans can be proud. They stood united and didn't join the rest of the country that sent a message to the White House. We Idahoans did let Washington know we aren't bothered by the war in Iraq. Staying the course isn't a losing battle cry for us.
Officials need to keep roads safe in outlying communities
A big rock came off Highway 200 outside of Clark Fork. It could have killed somebody, but how like this county to ignore its outer communities' highway safety. If there were more millionaires out our way, and I suspect there will be soon enough, perhaps our county would pay attention to our highway safety. The Hope Peninsula gets paved often enough.

Lions thank community for successful 'Tots' drive
This writing is one of the easiest and most appreciative the Sandpoint Lions do all year. Yet it is one of the most difficult because in a caring community some contributing individual or group will be left out. Please know that it is what you did to reach out to those needing a little help at Christmas that is important, not our fumbling with the "thanks."

It's a new year - resolve to quit smoking
It's a new year. And if you're contemplating quitting smoking, it just might mean a new you and a new lease on life. But you know quitting is not as easy as it sounds. Maybe you've tried to quit before, but a week later, you're back up to a pack a day. Once nicotine gets its hold on you, quitting smoking can seem really overwhelming. Is quitting really worth it? Stand up for the human rights of all people
It's high time — we've been told — that the Bonner County Human Rights Task Force made a statement about the highly publicized incident in Boundary County in which a young woman suffered burns from a campfire after being picked up by a young man who had stated, "Jews burn." The task force has been urged to take a stand and make a public statement regarding this incident. We agree that this is appropriate — and we would like to address the reasons it has taken us so long to do so.

Schweitzer's fire chief not to blame for incident
I am writing this letter in support of Schweitzer Fire Chief Spencer Newton. He has recently been charged with assault by a paramedic working for Bonner County EMS. I am not completely clear on all the facts of the case, but I can attest to Chief Newton's character and professionalism. As to the paramedic in question, He disregarded his duty to safeguard the public by ignoring an official request by Mr. Newton to proceed to the first aid station at the resort from Ponderay where the paramedic was responding from without lights and sirens as there was heavy traffic on the road and the patient was not going to be there for at least 30 minutes anyway. This paramedic ignored the request and passed Mr. Newton halfway up the mountain road weaving in and out of traffic with lights and sirens blaring. When Mr. Newton confronted the paramedic at the first aid station about this, the paramedic told him he doesn't take orders from him. Mr. Newton is the fire chief of Schweitzer fire district, the same district that this paramedic was responding in. Mr. Newton is responsible for the safety of these people.
