Plant a row for the hungry
Last year, the Bonner County Master Gardeners introduced the community to a concept called Plant A Row for the Hungry. The program is simple, an appeal to the gardeners of the community to plant a little extra in their vegetable plots, and to donate what they cannot use themselves to the local food bank. Many times, folks end up with an unexpected garden abundance which often goes to waste. The food banks can use all of this produce, and distribute it immediately, while it is fresh and wholesome.

Calm needs to prevail in Clark Fork planning
Want a ringside seat to what amounts to a town brawl? Go to the Clark Fork town council meeting. It's an eye opener.
Will more regulation really help children?
I'm afraid those who advocate stricter regulation of day care in Idaho have confused more regulation with better day care.

Tolerance cannot be a one-way street
We are in trouble and know one seems to be paying attention. There were two disturbing articles that are distant but tie together. Quoting the Bee article March 8. There is a concert in support of one of our local soldiers that was wounded and others now serving in the Middle East. "Thank you for your service." The disturbing part was even in parenthesis. "The host country does not allow pork and the soldier could get into serious trouble if it were sent." Wow! Here we are fighting for their freedom, getting killed and wounded, and our people can't eat pork, because we are in their host country and they might get upset. What happened to that word forced down our throats daily. "Tolerance?" They don't have any.

Word's modern definition wrongly used to define faith
Since others addressed the bulk of Bob Wynhausen's letter (Feb. 4, Daily Bee), I thought I'd address his use of the words fundamentalist and tolerance.
Regular maintenance can keep you out of hot water
Last week my company was doing a mold remediation project at a local area home. The lady of the house said she was having trouble getting hot water into the home. I asked when was the last time she drained her hot water heater. She said the tank was about seven years old and could not remember ever draining it. When examining her tank, I discovered it was about 25 percent full of sludge and the heating element had burned out.

Heavy industry doesn't belong in Sagle's midst
Does Sagle need heavy industry in the middle of their community? That's what Frank Linscott and Interstate Concrete want for a zone change for. For five years, residents have asked that the asphalt bath plant not be located in the middle of Sagle. Asphalt manufacturing is a major source of hazardous air pollutants. Studies have shown these air toxins may cause cancer, central nervous system problems, respiratory and many more health-related issues. Air currents carry the toxic pollutants further than the manufacturing site and there is no mechanism in place to monitor these toxic emissions. Loaded trucks are a major source of emissions as well as the actual mixing and loading of the black top. Used asphalt, stored for further use, when rained on will wash the toxic contaminates into the aquifer. The health issues are very real, and property values and more, are affected.
Soldier's death reminds us all that war has a face
There is no reason anyone reading this editorial would ever know Emerson Brand.
Asphalt plant makes poor introduction to community
Since 2001, citizens of Sagle have asked the county commissioners to not allow Interstate Asphalt batch plant to operate in the Sagle corridor. To our frustration, our wishes have been ignored and we now live with the result. The zoning is to change from rural/commercial to industrial and the batch plant along with other industry will be there on a permanent basis. No one will be able to change it.

Dismissive attitude shows toward byway supporters
What a deal Sunday's letter (March 4, Daily Bee) was. NICAN and Potter giving us both barrels at the same time. Mr. Potter, in particular, seems to have adopted an arrogant, condescending and pompous attitude toward all who oppose him. Lawrence Furry really seems to get him going (read the Bee's blogs.)
A better health care system starts with each one of us
Our health care system is broken. In Idaho alone, an estimated 200,000 residents have no health insurance. This creates a burden that taxes every inch of society's infrastructure, from personal relationships to professional opportunities.

Sedler knows the issues on Sand Creek byway
Peter Heraper's guest opinion (Daily Bee, March 20) complaining about NICAN's opposition to the projected bypass came ironically as the Corps of Engineers required the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) to redo much of the process because of ITD's own ineptitude. I don't know about Liz Sedler and 17 million acres of forest in Alaska that Mr. Heraper thinks has something to do with the bypass, but I do know that Liz knows the issues, technical and broad, about the bypass.

Levy will help students continue their success
I would like to correct some misinformation contained in recent letters to the Daily Bee.
Support extracurricular activities by voting yes
Extracurricular activities at the various institutions throughout our district are often considered by students one of the more pleasurable aspects of their education. Indeed, we have over 2,100 students involved in enterprises outside of the classroom, all who have done exceedingly well at the local and state level. The Sandpoint high school alone has already produced seven state champions and numerous runner-ups in everything from volleyball and soccer to drama and academic decathlon in the last two years alone.
Build a bridge by voting yes on levy
As we approach the March 20 Lake Pend Oreille School District levy election there are many shortfalls and deficiencies we could point to.
BONNER COUNTY

Kids and teachers worth your support
My name is Mike Turnlund and I am a teacher at Clark Fork High School. I would like to share my thoughts about the upcoming levy.
Don't be apathetic, support LPOSD levy
I hope by now everyone is aware that the upcoming levy is a replacement levy rather than an additional levy. The current levy that began in 2005 will expire on June 30, 2007. Without passing this levy on March 20, the daily essential operations of the Lake Pend Oreille School District are in jeopardy. The state provides only 68 percent of the total current overall funds needed to run our school district. This levy will provide staffing, capital equipment items for schools, maintenance of school facilities, improve technology, maintain pupil transportation and will help continue the support of student activities.

Future generations deserve our support
Each time a school levy is floated, I question why we are forced to do this. The county doesn't ask the voters every two years for money to keep up the roads or pay for sheriff's deputies. Cities don't ask voters to approve money for parks or police.
District needs to adopt fiscal responsibility
A story concerning band and other extracurricular activities ending ran on KREM-2 news on March 5 and is resentful. Every year it's "The sky is falling."
Community benefits from levy's approval
March 20, 2007, is a date that all citizens of Lake Pend Oreille School District No. 84 should have circled on their calendars. This is the date on which the voters in the district will have the opportunity to tell the school board that they are willing to support the supplemental levy that replaces the current levy that will expire on June 30, 2007.

It's time to invest in what we cherish
The quality of life here is second to none. There are jobs available for nearly anyone who wants to work. We still have a unique sense of community that is lacking in most places.
Don't let schools loose momentum
A large portion of the success of Lake Pend Oreille School District graduates is a direct reflection of the quality academic instruction we as a community are able to provide. The excellence of these young people is a direct result of the involvement of supportive parents and this community, who give of their time, money, and guidance.

Football game left Sandpoint players 'fit to be tied'
(In today's story, Robert Kellogg tells us about early football in Sandpoint. He calls his story, "Fit to be Tied." I became acquainted with Robert when I was asked to critique a book he was writing called, "50 True Tales of Northern Idaho." Robert has had a colorful career in Sandpoint: Ad sales and announcing for Norm Bauer at KSPT radio, writing for the Sandpoint News Bulletin, manager of the Panida Theater for Floyd Grey, just to name a few. He began researching old newspapers when he was with Lauren Pietsch at the News Bulletin and today's story comes from that research. It reflects a Sandpoint of yesteryear that is no more. Here is Robert's story — in his own words.)
