Congress again making a bad situation worse

Like almost everyone I know, I was a bit angry at AIG for paying out $165 million in bonuses. Old Farmin School won't be forgotten

(Recently, I walked by the site of the old Farmin School (Second and Main in Sandpoint). Like many who now live in Sandpoint, I never saw the school and I missed an experience that others still cherish. I have often heard, “That building should never have been torn down.” I realized seeing the real thing was impossible but I could vicariously walk the halls with someone who had attended the old school. Or stated another way, on what is government spending $6 billion if the end result is to be one whereby people volunteer their time and services?

Whoopee, LPOSD's levy was approved

Community's support will make cooperative grow

I want to personally thank the community for its overwhelming support of our recent Six Rivers Market’s kick-off potluck and fundraiser at Community Hall. It was evident that there is a palpable excitement in our community to pull together and create real change in the way we eat, the way we live, and the way we survive as a local economy. Patriotism doesn't always equal support of policies

I’m an old guy, and as I see the crowds shout, over and over, “Obama, Obama, Obama, Obama” in a mindless chant, I am reminded so clearly in my mind, of 70 years ago when the chant was, “sig heil, sig heil, sig heil,” as Hitler led his nation down the drain.  Timothy Geitner, the present Treasury secretary, stands on stage, 20 flags draped about him, smothered in red, white and blue, as he obligates our children for billions upon billions. In my mind’s eye, I see the pageantry men speaking draped in the red, white and black of the swastika that always accompanied the pronouncements in the Third Reich. The message is clear, if you are patriotic, you support the government’s policies, no matter what. I wish for the old days, when our government officials, even in times of war, stood without any flags, on a simple podium perhaps with one flag, and presented their case.

Consider that professional ball players be force-fed steroids until they become sterile. Then there would not be any of the  high-priced buggers being reproduced, such as the Mannings. Assessor's staff available to help complete form

35Regarding Cecilia Gors letter (Bee, Feb. 1), I had on my desk an application for Idaho Property Tax Reduction Program (Circuit Breaker), one page long plus a two-page worksheet to itemize the various medical expenses. How does that become 12 pages? Yes, it requires keeping a record of medical expenses like insurance premiums/drugs, doctors’ visits, ambulance, travel to and from hospitals, hospital bills not covered by insurance, etc. as well as various items of income. Do you require the assistance of a professional tax preparer? Are you 65 or older? Do you have a disability? And a few other things but once you know what records have to be saved, it might take a couple of hours to complete. I can’t see how that could possibly require 12 pages — unless you have multiple income sources. But they provide 1099 forms at the end of the year, which you copy and attach. And there is help available at the Assessor’s Office. What is the big deal?

People tired of games and growing corruption

What is this country coming to? Our esteemed President Barack Hussein Obama appoints Eric Holder “our” Attorney General (head of the Justice Department). Here is a man who is responsible for the release (by the way of pardon) of men who were making bombs for terrorists organizations. He is also responsible for the release of a Mr. Rich who was one of the most sought after swindlers of our time from prison. Another appointee by our greatly overrated president was the appointment of Tim Giethner a man who has a recent history of failure to pay taxes. Then finally paid up his back taxes when the “0” man told him to pay his back taxes because he wanted to make him “our” Treasury Secretary! What’s next? Al Sharpton to head our education department?
