Panida is non-profit and non-political
For those of you who missed reading it the first time in my film article, I want to reiterate that the Panida Theater did not pay for the young adult tickets nor did we register voters during the showing of "Fahrenheit 9/11." The Vote Hope Campaign paid for the young adults' admission and was available to register new voters. The Panida did not allow the distribution of any political material during that evening.

Property taxes are out of line
I have lived in Sandpoint for 12 years. When I first arrived here, property taxes seemed to be reasonable. With the influx of people and the rise in property values, the people who have lived here for a long time are paying the price. Property taxes are becoming unaffordable, and many people are unable to pay their taxes.

County board was one of inequality
At church recently, we sang a song, "God Bless Our Native Land," and the last four words struck a chord with me. "God save the state." I had an experience on Friday, July 2, 2004, that I hope none of the citizens of Bonner County ever have to go through.

The closing night of the Festival at Sandpoint was dedicated to my friend, traveling companion and fellow advocate of world peace and equality, Barbara Veraniam. It seems that I ruffled some feathers in the process of remembering her. Do I want to apologize? No. I said what came to me at the moment

Bypass issues needs leadership, not war
We're at war in Iraq, fighting a war on terrorism, a war on drugs and a war on poverty. We don't need a civil war in Bonner County. Threats of a recall or a boycott will not solve the division of thought we are all experiencing right now. Recalling elected officials will nto change anyone's mind on how they feel about the byway/bypass. It will only further divide neighbors. Boycotting certain businesses will not bridgethe gap, it will only hurt those trying to eke out a living and take care of their families.
Center's actions resulted in tragedy
This is a letter I never envisioned myself writing but, unfortunately, this is my reality.
Concert comments were inappropriate
Thank you to the Festival at Sandpoint leadership for publicly distancing themselves from the untimely political remarks made Sunday night by Ken Casler. He had the effect of trying to turn a beautiful night of symphony into a night of disharmony.

Volunteers made square possible
Rededicating Jeff Jones Town Square is an opportune time to acknowledge the volunteers who made this plaza a reality. Volunteers are key to "government of the people, by the people and for the people" — and in this case, they were the driving force behind the project.
Voters are disenfranchised
Voters for presidents in such states as Idaho are essentially disenfranchised. The electoral system for electing the president makes our vote irrelevant … Idaho has become such a one-party state that the Republicans take it for granted and the Democrats consider it hopeless. While both candidates campaign in Davenport, Iowa, the same day, neither national party bothers to campaign in this state.
Byway would destroy town
We just returned from another wonderful week on vacation in Sandpoint. As usual we stayed at the Lakeside Inn. We also ate at the restaurants overlooking Sand Creek, the marina, and the lake, and mountains in the distance. We hardly drove the car and walked everywhere we wanted to go including the beach for swimming everyday. Very relaxing. Sandpoint is a special place. We have been coming to this town almost every year since 1996 when my mother moved there from the East Eoast.
