Take your time, and get where you're going safely
Driving 120 miles round trip to work five days a week is an adventure each day. Most drivers that I meet every day are safe and courteous. But, that 10 percent of aggressive, brain dead and ignorant drivers make the whole trip interesting. Combat would be safer. If they would all just follow the driving regulations that we all must know to get a driver's license, the roads would be a lot safer.

If buildings could talk, what a story the Kamloops could tell us all
A few months ago, I was going to the Power House to make a picture of Gina Pucci-Deprez for my "Who Am I?" column. As I was walking toward the elevator, I encountered an old friend that I had not seen for many years. He did not offer his hand but I could tell by the pleasant look on his face that he was glad to see me. His name is Pend Oreille Pete and the last time I saw him was in the bank on Main and Second Avenue. I was delighted to see Pete once again and he brought back memories of the late Dale Selle and the hours we spent discussing the various buildings on First Avenue.

Careless disregard hurt our downtown business
Dear David,
Bypass will improve access, shopping
Since the total cost of the bypass project has now been published in this paper, it is time to thank those who caused it to be so high. The problem is, since so many of the hard working NICANese are too shy to let us know who they are, I suggest that those who own businesses that do not support NICAN display a sign to that effect. Then we can let all the modest NICAN supporters know how much we appreciate their lack of concern for the majority of Sandpointers. Some might think this is harsh but remember these people cared nothing about our rights as the majority or the tax burden of $11,000 a day they imposed on us. As Mr. Potter points out, we also must thank him and his friends for the yet to be declared legal bill. Oh, by the way, there are still two more NICAN lawsuits pending.

It was struck by lightening and the property owners were forced to remove it.
Why can't electric cars recharge themselves?
Recently I watched a documentary titled "Who Killed the Electric Car" and I think I know the answer. It was the car industry, oil companies, labor unions and the government. The reasons are as follows: Maintenance would have been simplified and many parts firms would have been put out of business. Oil is obvious with loss of revenue, labor unions were protecting the workforce and the government didn't want mass layoffs during that party's tenure. OK, all makes sense at least in the short-term.

We need to support the airport
I thoroughly endorse the comments of Rich Faletto in his guest opinion of Sept 4. I, particularly, reinforce the assertion that our airport "has the potential to be the economic engine …" It already is, but read on. Quest Aircraft, having already delivered five planes, I believe, is a $6 million and counting business with approximately 100 back orders. With 200 employees and growing, as Rich mentions, they already have a payroll approaching $10 million. My numbers are not company sourced but estimated from what I know of the local economy.

Milltown's 'House No. 9' recalls days of life in a timber town
I was driving out Boyer to Larch and I noticed a sign on the side of the street that read, “Milltown.” I am sure there were other words attached to the sign but it was the Milltown that got my full attention. Though the area was at one time part of a mill town there has been no mill there since Louisiana Pacific closed down. As I surveyed the area across from the Lincoln School, I fantasized a modern day Milltown that might be coming to that area in the future. I saw offices, malls, stores, fast food restaurants, and the usual array of condominiums.

Senate hopefuls hold debate

NICAN should turn efforts to restoring creek area
NICAN redemption a possibility.
Destruction of creek should be criminal
Sand Creek is not a "mud hole." At this very moment, anyone looking down Sand Creek toward the south from the "Y" at highways 95 and 200 can clearly see the beauty of this, a part of our community, beautiful creek. The byway or bypass or whatever you want to call it, will destroy one of nature's truly beautiful and useful Sandpoint areas.

NICAN's tactics resemble old-fashioned filibusters
As an old historian I was drawn into historical parallels when it comes to NICAN. One instance I recollected was the filibusters that southern senators used to stage, usually against civil rights bills, to paralyze Congress to force the Senate to drop the bill. Strom Thurmond had the record filibuster- 24 straight hours of talk, talk, talk. He read the almanac, telephone book, catalogs, anything to prolong the filibuster. The parallel with NICAN, in my opinion, is instead of talk, talk, talk, they sue, sue, sue.

I am writing in to publicly recognize the Lake Pend Oreille School District board for granting Sandpoint Charter School's petition to expand to a high school of choice over the next few years. In the public school arena where dollars are tight, it is not easy to make a decision that may have an adverse economic impact on the local district.

Innuendos have no place in presidential campaign
Our local liberal radio "objective" rant, face to face, chose to throw out some ugliness about the honorable Gov. Sarah Palin's daughter, despite most media's agreement that candidates underage children would be off limits to media's attacks.
Palin is just the person needed in government
Sarah Palin is just the sort of person we need in this country. I am so sick of partisan politics and the me first instead of the country first politicians. The current crop of politicians (not all) are just exactly what has caused our current problems. We have more potential energy solutions than the entire Muslim world but politics has caused nothing to be done for more than 20 years. I believe we should get behind our two reformers and change the direction of this country.

Palin lacks attributes cherished by residents
Sarah Palin may have been born here but she seems to lack the attributes of the people I know in Bonner County. Where is her concern for education, infrastructure, health care, the environment, the economy as it impacts the poor, and Idaho families, who don't earn the $100,000 plus "middle class" incomes? Her speeches appear to be written by the same Republicans who have tried to put happy faces on President Bush's failed and destructive policies. She and John McCain sound ready to follow Bush's path of ill-conceived military adventurism, wasting both our treasury and human life.

Inability to communicate doomed crosswalk plan
Heartsick, appalled, disappointed is exactly how I felt after receiving a drawing of a pedestrian crossing at Highway 2 and Michigan Street shortly before it was to be implemented near my business.
