ITD should end parking on state highway route
This year is ending just as it has for the past half century. A bypass planned and nothing accomplished. All thanks to a small handful of people who believe the putrid mud pit that runs behind the Panida is a thing of beauty.
Grant would be frivolous use of our tax dollars
Regarding the article "Film institute hopes to make city home," I am curious as to why the Department of Agriculture would award a grant for a film institute. Does the grant money come from taxes we pay to support the Department of Agriculture?
U.S. can't be great with right-wing leadership
What Steve Brixen's thorough Dec. 27 guest opinion seems to suggest is that he wants more of George W. Bush. Besides honesty, the only difference between what Bush has done or tried to do and what Steve is looking for is dealing with illegal aliens.

Carla Marie Brown, 58
Carla Marie Brown, 58, wife of former county commissioner Gene Brown, passed away on Dec. 22, 2008, at Bonner General Hospital in Sandpoint, Idaho. She was born on Jan. 5, 1949, at Whidbey Island, Wash.Carla attended schools in southern California, graduating from Valencia High School in 1966. Her first job was managing Custom Art Press, which handled specialty publications. She was working as a legal secretary for attorney Mark B. Jones at her passing.Moving to Idaho in 1977, she and her husband dealt in mail order used and rare books. They later sold books at Foster's Crossing, then opened a large store in the old Safeway building across from the Sandpoint Library. Here people were greeted by their pet dachshund, Fritz, "the book store dog." When the hospital bought the building, they moved to their last location near Fourth and Poplar.Carla, under the encouragement of her mother Neoma and stepfather Mike Hough, a Pearl Harbor survivor who saw much combat in World War II, was an avid reader. To get youngsters into reading, Carla developed many programs which were of great help to local parents and teachers. For most of her life, she read at least one and often two books a day.She served two terms as chairman of the Bonner County Republican Central Committee. Under her leadership, this group won the first blue ribbons ever at the county fair … along with Republican candidates eventually gaining a majority for county and state elected positions. As a young girl, Carla became challenged by epilepsy. She never let this affect her goals or work performance in any way.Carla was preceded in death by her biological father, Bob Reathaford; her stepfather, Marshal N. "Mike" Hough; and her grandparents. She is survived by her mother, Neoma; a brother, Patrick; three sisters, Barbara, Kathy and Susan; and husband, Gene; along with several nieces and nephews. Her husband often said that a description of Carla could be found in the Bible at Proverbs 41. After an intense study of the Bible, she became a baptized Christian in December 1989.A memorial service for her will be held on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Seventh-day Adventist Church on West Pine Street.

Miracles do happen! In an age of bitter political recrimination, a truly bipartisan bill has just been introduced in the US Congress by Senators Crapo (R-ID) and Baucus (D-MT). The Fee Repeal and Expanded Access Act (S. 2438) would roll back thousands of fees that Americans are being charged for mere access to their public lands.

No new taxes
That "black hole" of property taxation, LPOSD, is back again planning in 2008 to extract $18.3 million in plant facilities levy from its "money tree," we property owners. Look through the smoke and mirrors of LPOSD's upcoming propaganda deluge. Vote "no" as in 2006. LPOSD must learn to make do with existing resources just like the rest of us!

They're at it again, another property "tax" increase by those who are not accountable to taxpayers. Yep same old bunch of tax (levy, bond, assessment, etc.) and spend LPOSD who think all they have to do is wave their "tax" wand and property owners and renters (that's right, renters) will pay up.

ITD's Sand Creek plan is outdated
What was/is the Idaho Department of Transportation thinking? A byway in Sand Creek? In spite of the obvious reason that highways are placed away from water; in spite of the looming loss of precious animal habitat; in spite of the obvious loss to the community of a potential park, a green belt, a sanctuary, even commercial development would be preferable to an ugly, noisy, and dirty three lane freeway. Why?

The managing editor of the Daily Bee asks us to be wise enough and unselfish enough to embrace a document that reflects the dreams and wishes of those who want things we do not. But what does the comp plan look like? Has the Bee printed the map in their paper so the citizens can see how they are affected? Has the Bee printed the map in their paper so the citizens know whether major change is happening in their neighborhood? Or does the Bee want us to compromise with what an out-of-town firm and a few select people guided by this firm have in store for our town?

Commercial district doesn't need expansion
I am a lifelong resident of Sandpoint; my husband has lived here since 1962. We see no need to expand the commercial area into the current residential areas as proposed by the city's new comprehensive plan. We have many beautiful old buildings downtown; we need more retail shops there, instead of real estate offices. People might shop downtown and not go out north to the big box stores.

Vitamin D deficiency too common in our climate
For many years, Vitamin D has been a known cure for rickets, once common in young children and now rare. More recently, it has been shown to help boost calcium absorption in the body, preventing or slowing osteoporosis. Now, vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to other chronic conditions such as autoimmune disease (multiple sclerosis, for example) and even some forms of cancer.

Let's work together to revamp Comp Plan
Growth is going to happen. It's right up there with death as taxes on the inevitability scale.
Do you know how plan will impact your street?
Residents of Sandpoint, do you know how our city's proposed Comprehensive Plan could potentially affect your neighborhood? Are you willing to see many of Sandpoint's neighborhoods opened to commercial use? Would you like a "commercial neighborhood zone" on your block? How about a "dynamic mixing of land uses" in your neighborhood?
Crews needs to sand city streets earlier
Sandpoint a walking town? Driving town? I think not!
Mandatory community service is oxymoron
Sound like an oxymoron to you? Well, it is. Many organizations centered around something other than community service require hours of volunteer work. Even some schools require volunteer work to graduate. Many people view community service as something they "need" to do, but the definition of volunteer is literally to offer oneself to perform a service willingly and without pay. Being forced to work without pay doesn't exactly fall under this definition. Genuine community service is valuable and really makes a difference in the community. However, this value is lost when community service turns into forced drudgery that looks good on college entrance forms. I believe community service should be an act from the heart and is something to be proud of.

Don't throw away old to make room for the new
It has recently come to light that in the process of revising the city's Comprehensive Plan, there is a proposed plan to change the zoning and reclassify the uses of several neighborhoods — several of them historic in nature — from residential to mixed use of greater density and commercial use.
City's neighborhoods are being threatened
My family and I have lived on Garden Street here in Sandpoint for more than 20 years. Along with our neighbors, we have watched with dismay as a three-story monstrosity is being constructed just across Olive to the east of us. We have now learned that the proposed Sandpoint Comprehensive Plan would, in fact, downsize our existing Residential B neighborhood so that the same type of eyesore being built on Olive could be built on our own street. We live on a quiet, dead-end street and never in our wildest dreams thought that such a thing might be allowed right next door to us.
Panhandle Special Needs needs community's help
Panhandle Special Needs Inc. is a local facility that day by day helps improve the lives of persons with disabilities in our community. These people face challenges their entire lives that we can only imagine. They are often made to feel "less than," ignored, made fun of, and generally ostracized and not given the chance to prove their value. Within the walls of PSNI, life opens up for them and they are loved, respected, trained to work, communicate, learn skills that they need to become active, participating members of this community.

Americans need to demand action on protocol
I find it interesting that new Prime Minister Kevin Rudd of Australia will sign the Kyoto Protocol on global warming, leaving only the United States as the only industrialized nation not to have joined it.

Seasonal Affective Disorder is common in the region
When the days grow shorter and sunlight gets more and more sparse, people living in northern climates like ours can become affected by seasonal affective disorder (SAD). The National Institute of Health estimates that more than 36 million Americans are affected by SAD every year.

Let's treat each other with kindness, respect
I have lived in Sandpoint for over 25 years and am worried about the current personality trend. Last weekend, while making our way around Sandpoint after the Sunday snow dumping, my partner and I, once again experienced the rudeness that has plagued Sandpoint.

Next time you see a vet, be sure to say thank you
I want to thank the veterans for serving our country. They faced the enemy to protect our freedoms. To deal with the hardships and the brutality of war must have been a struggle and they deserve our respect. They faced every type of violent action, gas bombs, you name it. They saw their friends die beside them. Even now, they have to deal with roadside bombs and weapons that can kill miles away. Servicemen and women coming back from Iraq have to be reintroduced into U.S. society so they don't have to worry about the trash on the side of the street exploding.
Ron Paul's popularity is no coincidence
I would like to thank the Bonner County Daily Bee for front-paging the article "Paul popular pick in Bonner County."
