Lack of options only adds to transportation dilemma
I have spent several years in Clark Fork watching the discussion in Sandpoint about the Sand Creek Bypass. I understand the discussions have been going on for about 60 years. Think they have reached the point of tunnel vision. I’m not talking about building a tunnel for the bypass, but rather not seeing the possibilities outside the concept in today’s transportation problems (economy).

A note regarding the front page tennis picture on July 16’s Bee. Sandpoint Tennis Association appreciates the publicity but I’m not sure enough credit is given Kim Woodruff of the city Parks Department for his efforts to make tennis and other sports viable here in Sandpoint. How many towns the size of Sandpoint can boast eight tennis courts, numerous soccer fields, baseball fields, rifle range, various smaller parks and a city beach park second to none and all kept in excellent condition.
Happy anniversary to byway plan
Happy 60th anniversary to the original plans for the original plans for the Sand Creek Bypass.
And the byway is going in right away
It was school year 1957-’58 and my second-grade teacher was Bessie Loman. One day she came into class and showed us the drawing of the state’s Sand Creek Bypass. As second-graders she even had to explain what “bypass” meant. At that time the “bypass” now “byway” for some reason — was a large wooden creosoted piling bridge, going up Sand Creek in basically the same area now planned. The cost was incomprehensible to us then — well over $100,000. In context the 5-cent refund then on a quart pop bottle was a lot of money to grade schoolers. And I remember Mrs. Loman closing the class discussion by saying, “… .and it’s going to go in right away” — meaning the bridge would be soon finished.

Common sense must be used in drafting laws
I am writing in response to the sidewalk issue on the corner of Third and Pacific. I feel it would be more dangerous for young kids darting from sidewalk to street between parked cars. ITD not doing area any favors with bypass plan

For whom is he doing a favor?'Certainly not Sandpoint or Bonner County citizens and definitely not Idaho taxpayers.'Approving a project to build a highway right smack through the center of downtown Sandpoint cannot possibly be a 'favor' for anyone that I can think of, unless it is the contractor who receives the $98.4 million contract.
