Bill targets school board recall issues
A bill inspired by the confusion that followed the recall of two West Bonner school board trustees is being rewritten to address concerns of some of the State Affairs committee following a Feb. 21 hearing on the bill. Rep. Mark Sauter, R-Sandpoint, began revising the bill after his original legislation, House Bill 420, was sent to General Orders to ensure the bill does not conflict with other statutes. A bill sent to that committee can be amended on the floor if later brought up for action, or can languish there if it isn't passed into law if the Legislature adjourns before then.

Sandpoint native featured in Google series, 'Job Hoppers'
Coding and flag football aren’t often considered synonymous, but a new episode of a Google series featuring Sandpoint native Annaka McClelland shows just how closely connected the two activities can be. The series, "Job Hoppers," aims to make the real world a little bit less of a mystery for the up-and-coming generation. Creators of the show help young job seekers learn about popular careers — from cyber security to digital marketing and e-commerce — and hear advice from fellow “Gen Zers” on how to break into these fields, Jessica Ryan, Google employee, said. Experimental gene therapy allows kids with inherited deafness to hear
Gene therapy has allowed several children born with inherited deafness to hear. A small study published Wednesday documents significantly restored hearing in five of six kids treated in China. On Tuesday, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia announced similar gains in an 11-year-old boy treated there. And earlier this month, Chinese researchers published a study showing positive results in two other children. So far, the experimental therapies only target one rare condition. But scientists say similar treatments could someday help many more kids with other types of hereditary deafness. Genes are responsible for up to 60% of hearing loss in children.

Idahoans have a choice in setting state's trajectory
As an American born into freedom and liberty, I had no perception of censorship. I quickly learned the value of freedom of speech, forced to carefully craft anything I said in public. In my AFS family, I stifled my horror when I learned the father with whom I was staying had arranged a marriage for his oldest daughter; despite the fact she was in love with a different man. Instead of voicing my outrage, I learned to share my sorrow and tears with his daughters behind closed doors. I learned about the insidious nature of authoritarianism. I learned to channel my anger and the timing into promises for the future and the country I loved.

The inspiration of Ireland's St. Brigid
Who was St. Brigid and why is she inspiring many 1,500 years after her death?
Devotees of St. Brigid commemorate the 1,500th anniversary of her death on Jan. 31, the feast day of the so-called matron saint of Ireland. Major commemorations began with the return of a relic associated with Brigid to Kildare, Ireland — about a millennium after her remains were removed from her hometown. St. Patrick has long been the saint most identified with Ireland. But Brigid has been gaining a following. Devotees draw inspiration from Brigid the saint and from the ancient pagan goddess whose name and attributes she shares. They see Brigid as representing feminine spirituality and empowerment.
