Legislation must have a public option
It is unbelievable to me that Congress may force more, rather than less, corporate health care on America. Corporations have systematically drained prosperity from individual non-connected Americans, and also health and life itself. Health care reform without a public option exacerbates this situation. I am among the progressives who will vote out any incumbent who votes against a public option. And Obama, as well.

Obama is a terrorist sympathizer
I have long suspected our president, Barack Hussein Obama was weak on national defense regarding terrorism and was sympathetic toward the Muslim Jihad movement that puts all civilized people around the world in peril. Barack Hussein Obama refused to call the recent attack at Fort Hood a terrorist act. He has implemented his policy that will not allow government officials to reference the ‘war on terror’. He has given millions of U.S. tax dollars to Hamas, (an internationally recognized terrorist organization). These examples are just a few of the numerous indicators of his true convictions and beliefs.
Better options will save lives
Options need to be available for those 46 million people who don’t have insurance. The health insurance and drug companies are paying millions a day to fight any kind of “change.” They don’t want to adjust their profit margins down by providing for higher risk members. Who would? They will fight with everything they have to maintain the status quo and they have unbelievable resources.

New guidelines will hurt women's health
I am deeply concerned for the women of this country, given the new findings by medical researchers as it pertains to mammograms and pap smears. During my entire adult life women have struggled to have our concerns be recognized by the medical industry, whether it is with doctors, who are mostly male or insurance companies who seem to try to find ways to reduce coverage. Great progress has been made to reduce the number of cases of cervical cancer with annual pap smears where there is also a thorough examination of the breasts followed by mammograms which have significantly reduced the deaths from breast cancer. Now we have Dr. Alan G. Waxman who was co-author of the new guidelines telling us that our annual pap smears are no longer necessary and our annual mammograms may not be necessary. What in the world is he thinking. I know many women, young women, whose lives have been saved because of these procedures and because they see the doctor on an annual basis for a thorough exam.

Outrage over bill growing each day
Are you as alarmed as I am to hear the phrase, “outrage,” in regards the health care package? I looked the word up, because I hear an “outrage” echo … millions of people have expressed “outrage” over the mercurial nature of the bill; as it morphs behind closed doors without observation or permission. Some analysts deduce there will be about $500 billion in tax increases, major Medicare cuts, punitive measures for non-participants (this is helping the poor?) and the medical system as we know it will switch to replay time, under the chilling spell of bureaucracy and countless new patients.
Tragedy had nothing to do with religion
Evelyn Finney brings up a good point; the tragedy at Fort Hood was murder. However, for anyone to not want to actually understand the criminal mind or act is to go blindly through life in our currant violent times. Whether we are discussing school shootings, child molestation, or war crimes, we cannot work toward solutions, if we decide to simplify the dire problems. It makes perfect sense for sane people to try to understand the deranged acts of the few.

Warm up before cold weather chores
I woke up Sunday to find a winter wonderland. Snow was falling gracefully from the sky. Images of snow falling gently to the ground brings in warn thoughts of a fire place roaring, maybe hot coffee or coco soothing those tired sore bones after a long winter day. For me; however, it brings in thoughts of snow shoveling, snow plowing, snow blowing and a skid steer pushing snow from congested areas.

Hope tracks existence to railroad's arrival
The first white man to come to the Hope area was the famed explorer David Thompson, mapmaker and fur dealer. He traveled from Canada to the peninsula of Lake Pend Oreille and built Kullyspel House, a trading post, in September 1809. Thompson reported some problems with the roof of his building and said, “The snow in melting found many a passage…” Thompson abandoned Kullyspel House in 1811 and moved his operation to the Spokane House. Hope got its start in 1882 with the coming of the railroad. Construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad around Lake Pend Oreille brought numerous workers to the area. The town was built on a hill overlooking the beautiful lake and any person living in the area today will readily tell you that it is the most beautiful spot on earth.

Community will miss 'T-bone' a great deal
Anthony Joerger was the man killed in the pedestrian accident last week. Let me tell you about Anthony. For the last several months, five and up to seven days a week, Anthony would dine at the end of the bar at Dish Home Cooking. We called him T-bone. It was a given, we knew that was his seat. Many restaurants in town knew our T-bone, and his gentle demeanor and subtle wit brought daily wry grins to any within earshot. I understand a dozen chefs in town want to volunteer to bear his casket. There is a picture of Anthony, with an empty place setting, his perpetually filled diet Coke, and a candle where he sat for his daily meals, and for those of us who loved him, we all are finding ourselves weeping every day since he has passed. We miss him so. Others knew him from the Farmer’s Market, and the new winter Farmer’s Market at the Cedar Street Bridge. May God accept Anthony Joerger into his loving arms, for he was gentle, and kind, and loved.
Honor Anthony by improving safety
I am writing this letter because of the most recent loss of one of the sweetest men I know. Anthony was tragically killed last Thursday while crossing the intersection on Fifth and Cedar.

If Buildings Could Talk - What a Story the Kamloops Could Tell
A few months ago, I was going to the Power House to make a picture of Gina Pucci-Deprez for my “Who Am I?” column. As I was walking toward the elevator, I encountered an old friend that I had not seen for many years. He did not offer his hand but I could tell by the pleasant look on his face that he was glad to see me. His name is Pend Oreille Pete and the last time I saw him was in the bank on Main and 2nd Avenue. I was delighted to see Pete once again and he brought back memories of the late Dale Selle and the hours we spent discussing the various buildings on 1st Avenue.

Support your county weed supervisor
Bonner County has been blessed with Brad Bluemer as our weed supervisor for the past few years, but it has come to my attention that he does his job with one arm tied behind his back. Xylitol is deadly for family pets, animals
Our family dog has gone through hell for the past four days. He woke us up at 3:00 am in severe convulsions Thursday morning. I got him to the North Idaho Animal Hospital and they immediately started him on anticonvulsants but it was hours before they could finally get the convulsions under control. The next 24 hours were touch and go and we had nearly given up hope. Drs Pierce, Mehra and Wetzel worked on him for hours. We were at a loss to figure out what had stated his illness. His lab tests and response to medications finally confirmed that the most likely cause was Xylitol — an artificial sweetener most commonly used in sugarless gum.

Dan Griesemer has done a lot for CWC
Could you please let your readers know the point you were trying to make in your column (Oct. 22) in regards to Mr. Griesemer’s financial package and his leaving Coldwater Creek. I know that it’s public record but I would like to know why you felt the need to gossip about it. I can only think of a couple of reasons why you would print what you did. The first is that you were trying to be funny in which case you sadly missed the mark. The second is that you have some personal grudge against Dan and you used your professional power to settle a score. Care to enlighten us?

Roundabouts, curbs are lacking in charm
In the past I have been quite impatient with those with the “throw the bums out” attitude. However, I am beginning to lean in that direction myself. Sandpoint was named best small town in the West, not best city in the West. It seems to me that our city council and planning departments have big city-itis. Case in point. The bulbous corner curbs in town may look citified but they eliminate at least one desperately needed parking spot in the block and make parking difficult.

Education should have priority over bypass
The recent story in the Bee regarding the possible sale of the University’s Agricultural Station land in Sandpoint to provide desperately needed funds for education indicates that the State’s priorities are out of whack. When more than a million dollars can be dumped on an ill-conceived bypass instead of being redirected into the education of our youth, it’s time to stop and take another look.

Day allows us to honor those who serve U.S.
Ninety-one years ago, Nov. 11 was celebrated around the world because the Great War finally came to an end. The carnage was so great, the devastation so concentrated and the consequences so profound it was inconceivable at the time that there would ever be another conflict so great. That the war could ever be called World War I and the Armistice forgotten was incomprehensible.

To catch a train at the Great Northern Depot at the end of Main Street meant a long walk or hitching a ride in a wagon. There was a problem.
